Cant access scratch disk

I have been working and editing a project. Suddenly one day, I open it and it says "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable" and it will not load my file.
The file is located on my lacie external drive, and I have been editing the project without a problem for 2 years. What changed to cause this?
