Question

Captions not taking corrections, reverting to auto transcription

Hello.

In our two person facility, we are now both struggling with captions not saving corrections, but randomly reverting back to the suggested autotranscript. The longer a sequence stays open the more corrections revert back. My colleague quite fittingly compared the situation to a whack a mole game.

At first, the corrections are taken, but then, over time, they revert back and there is no telling really where, when and in what order this happens. Yesterday I lost 1h's worth of work. It does not matter whether a project is constantly manually being saved.

The only workaround I could find, and it's not a great one, is to have an autotranscript and a captions track created, export an srt file, make corrections in the srt file, upload the srt to a new sequence.

Is this a known issue?

Many thanks.

I do have the same very frustrating problem.

Everytime I make a correction in the transcript panel to correct what the auto transcription missed, I have to change it at least 2 times everytime I correct a paragraph. The system either revert back to the previous version, erases the first word, or shoot me somewhere random in my video.

Just to make sure I explain exactly what I do:

1. I double click on the paragram

2. I correct the text

3. I click back below the paragraph I was editing, in the black space between the paragraphs.

To be honest I used to pirate premiere for the longest time. I figured this auto-transcription was going to save me a ton of time, and right now it is even slowing me more than before.

I'm still having this issue. The workaround is passable if all you need to do is create captions in the timeline, but is no help if you need to share transcripts. Changes in the Caption text tab do not pull through to the Transcript tab. This is incredibly frustrating.

@NGDavison,

> Changes in the Caption text tab do not pull through to the Transcript tab.

That is true. But that's not the issue discussed in this thread - which is mostly that changes to the TRANSCRIPT in the transcript tab were not sticking. I say mostly because this is a thread that started in 2021 when the new workflow was introduced.

Once Captions are created from a transcript, they are independent from the transcript. Generally, edit the transcript before creating the captions.

If you are not looking for an exact PR transcript for import, there are other options/workarounds for exporting captions as text.

If I'm not understanding what you are trying to do, let us know.

SP,

Sorry. I also had some trouble with this in the previous version and in projects I updated from the previous version. Try a brand new project in the latest version and test to see if you have the same problem. If not, try and copy-paste your materials there and see if you have the same problem.

Thanks,
Kevin

I'm on Windows 10 Home (21H1), Premiere version 15.4.1 (build 6) and I too have lost wayyy too much time due to this issue.  There's no point in describing my experiences because Studio Patricia is going through the SAME EXPERIENCE.  Putting it as a game of "whack a mole" is perfect!  I've been editing a video that should have been done in 10 minutes, and it's taken me 90 minutes to complete it.  I think there's still going to be a spelling error in the captions, but I don't even care anymore!

Per Sumeet, I'm NOT editing the captions in the Text panel; i've been editing in the Captions panel of the Captions Workspace.  You should just trust the users here when they tell you that something. is. not. working.

Also, by the way - i've tested this on two different computers (both Windwos 10) with two different Adobe accounts (my work and my personal) and it's still happening.  It IS NOT an issue tied to my OS, nor is it a single computer or settings saved in the cloud (two different Adobe accounts).  It's an issue with Premiere 😞

To quickly add on and correct myself...

It seems I am editing in the Text panel (the Captions panel residing in it).  I haven't tested editing in the Program Monitor window, but I'm sure that will work a bit better since I've found other threads in the Community forums that suggest to do the same. But...

It shouldn't be that way.  Why allow people to edit in the text/captions panel if it's not going to work properly?  Just take that functionality away.  Don't give us that option.  It felt very obvious and natural to make my edits over there.  I appreciate Sumeet for offering this workaround, but it's still just a workaround at the end of the day.

Richard, thanks for the detailed info, and the clarification that, yes, in the new PR captions workflow the "captions" panel is indeed named the "Text Panel."

Are you saying that when you make your edits in the Program Monitor the problem went away? I thought some of the users expriencing this problem were editing in the Program Monitor. But if this is a workaround for even some users, it would be good to pin down. I have been uable to reproduce the problem, so have been no help in pinning down the cause.

Kevin's suggestion is also a good one - and to rule out if you have demonstrated the problem in a new project.

Let us know.

I thought I finally saw a uservoice bug report on this, but I don't see my note with a link.

Hi Studio Patricia,

We're sorry about the poor experience. Instead of editing the caption from the Text panel, please try to edit the caption from the Program monitor & check if it's working properly.

Thanks,

Sumeet

Thats no help, can you be more specific, there appears no option to edit captions except in the usual transcript window.

I can longer work properly as every time i edit text, I add a new clip to edit uniquely, but it justs reverts to pre-edit, spelling mistakes etc...why is this..is there no way to edit clips except in the finished arrangement?

@jeremyrackham,

This is an old thread, and the workflow has changed. In the current release version (PR 24.2.1), I am not having a problem editing captions in the Text panel/captions tab or in the Program monitor.

Are you saying that you can edit, but it changes back once you add another clip to the sequence? Is it a new clip, or another instance of a clip already in the sequence?
