Question

Captions workflow between aspect rations

Hi all, I just spent a considerable amount of time splitting and merging captions after resizing a video to 9:16 for IG reels. I tried auto reframing but it only changes the font size, and I would sometimes end up with two lines instead of one. What is your captions workflow when working on two different aspect ratios? Do you just make sure the two are compatible - x amount of characters in 16x9 to be sure it fits in 9x16 ?

Thanks in advance,

I can't find the other posts I recall on this topic - meaning captioning portrait style frame. You are on the right track regarding compatibility. But it is a challenge. You just have very little space in portrait mode, and that will usually mean a physically small device, so you can't just make the font smaller than in the landscape version. My thought before was that it requires a different caption stream. And more lines is the main variable, other than re timing with more caption blocks.

Let us know what you do!

Hey Stan,

What I've ended up doing is reframe in 9:16, figure out the ideal amount of characters for this format and then scale it back to 16:9 with the same captions. Seems a bit backwards but there's no easy way to do it unfortunately!

Thanks for reporting back. Other users will be helped by your experience.

That approach makes sense to me.What font and character count did you use?

The Create Captions dialogue (from transcription) includes several options for formatting (characters per line/one vs two lines) that can be useful. And the public beta now includes alerts for out of spec captions. I have not played with that.
