Capturing Old Formats (VHS, Video8, MiniDV)

Hi there,

I have tapes on various formats: VHS, Video8 and miniDV (and have working camcorders for both of the last two). I am wondering what is the best way to capture the tapes?

I read that the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle could be an option, though it seems to have mixed reviews due to compatibility issues.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

If your mini dv camera has analog in you can use the camera as a converter for the vhs and V8 tapes.

Thanks. It does, though I'm a bit confused as the best way to connect the Video8 Camcorder to the DV camera, and then connect that to the PC. (and rooting through all of my cables I don't appear to have anything that would work)

The outputs on the Video8 camera are:

AUDIO  (one, which is black), VIDEO, RFU DC OUT

The in/outs on the DV camera are:

DV, AV (one, which is yellow), S-VIDEO, USB

Thanks!

I don't have an updated list of hardware devices that can do all this as it changes everyday. I'll leave that list to someone else.  But, I'd stick with timebase correction VHS players, component or s-video connections, and non-h.264 codecs to avoid visual artifacts. and remember to deinterlace before upscaling.

I use a Grass Valley ADVC 110 external digital converter

I don't think it is sold now, but you might find one on eBay

Thanks. I presume I would need to get a Firewire card? And if so would a budget one be fine?
