Question

Closed captions word spacing (PP version 14.7.0)

Hello, first time doing Closed Captions.

I've created a few captions using the format CEA-708 Service 1.

The space between letters and words seems to be very wide and I can't see any option to make it appear closer. It is difficult to read...

Please see screenshot attached. Any help appreciated.

It must be a bug and somehow it appears correctly now (see screenshot).

This is what I did:

I created a temporary copy of the closed captions.

I modified it into Open Captions and placed it on the timeline above to check if it appears ok. It did.

So then I deleted the Open Captions from the timeline to go back and finish my Closed Captions. At this point both the Open Captions and the Closed Captions were appearing on top of each other even if I deleted it from the Timeline.

So then, I deleted the Open Captions file on the Project Browser window. Still both appeared.

I changed the Settings, to CEA-608. The Closed Captions were created as CEA-708, so in theory everything should disappear from the screen.

However, somehow the Closed Captions now appear as they should be, font lettering properly spaced.

So problem solved for now!

After closing the project and opening again same problem persists with wide spaced lettering....

Post a screenshot of the Essential Graphics Panel.

You do not want 608 or 708 but rather Subtitles.

Closed captions are designed to be embedded in the video file. The actual appearance of them is determined by the viewer's settings. So the styling available is very limited. The specifications are also more exact, so limiting the number of characters per line, for example.

Do you actually need closed captions? What is your use going to be?

What @Stan Jones says. Are you sure you want Closed Captions? Most times people actually want to use Subtitle (an other option when you create a caption track. But I can't test as I dont have 14.7 installed anymore.)

Can't you see the screenshot I posted? Sorry, what EGP means?
