Im trying to rearrange some clips by holding down the command key and dragging (which is supposed to prevent it from overwriting). however it only works half of the time (sometimes it will successfully move without overwriting but sometimes it will overwrite regardless of me holding down the command key). does anyone know why this is? i always make sure that i have the playhead over the clip that i want to move.

Does not matter where the playhead is,

You need to make sure the clip is selected (white border), hold down mouse and press command, still holding down the mouse, then move the clip.

A common error is when the editor release the Command key before releasing the mouse.  Please be careful to release the mouse first.
