Computer completely shuts down instantly while preforming edits in Premiere Pro

Hello,

Long-time reader first-time poster. My desktop began to completely shut down while gaming about six months ago. Sometimes it would just instantly shut off and other times the displays would shut off, the fans would whirr very fast, and I would have to depress the power button for a few seconds to shut it down.

Now it has started to do the same thing while using Premiere Pro. The computer will shut down in Premiere when:

  • Preforming slip edits
  • Using complex transitions (plugins and presets)
  • Exporting via Media Encoder (but not when exporting the same sequence from Premiere itself)
  • Repositioning windows from one monitor to the other (I have 3 monitors, but have been using 2 since this problem became worse. It seems to help)
  • Preforming trimming edits with keyboard

The machine shuts down while gaming when:

  • Sometimes running games in full screen
  • Running older and newer games with varying levels of graphic quality and demand with no consistency
  • Sometimes running Steam "Big Picture" mode, but not when launching from desktop

I updated graphic drivers and system, as well as ran a few diagnostics but nothing seemed out of order. I ran:

  • Windows Memory Diagnostic
  • Intel Processor Diagnostic 64-bit
  • Virtual Memory Stress Test

I would very much appreciate any suggestions on what the issue might be and maybe what to try next.

Thanks!

What errors do you see in the Event Viewer?

Last shut down was while gaming in 4k got a bunch of errors: all where "Source: Bonjour Service". Errors include "Bad service type in ._MSM_Video_Service._tcp.local. Application protocol name must be underscore plus 1-15 characters" "Bad service type in ._MSM_Video_Service._tcp.local. Application protocol name must be underscore plus 1-15 characters" "Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\Michael Cox\AppData\Local\chromium\Application\chrome.exe"."

I think you need to reinstall Windows. Unless a piece of your hardware is actually faulty. Try MemTest86 as perhaps you have a faulty memory chip: https://www.memtest86.com/

If you can, I would purchase an SSD to reinstall windows on. That way you can archive your current c:drive and fire it back up if you need to. Also, you can use the current c:drive as an extra data drive when you are setup again.

PP works best with Nvidia cards... you might consider a 1060 to go along with that hardware spec.

What you are describing is a computer with CPU fan/GPU fan clogged with dust. Open the case and use compressed air to remove/clean up the CPU/GPU coolers.

Sudden shutdowns when doing CPU/GPU intesive task such as gaming often boils down to dust in CPU/GPU coolers leading to the computer shutting down to prevent overheating.
