Question

Converting a short MP4 to an animated GIF

I converted a short MP4 to a GIF, in the hope it would work as an embeddable animated GIF on a site forum.

It converted ok but I ended up with a zillion gif images and not an animated GIF.

Is there a way of getting what I want?

Adding to PS GIF creation already mentioned,

you can even limit your GIF to as low as 5 fps in export settings.

New Premiere Pro versions have Animated GIF, older ones have GIF Sequences,

so you can use ezgif.com for both GIF creation and GIF optimization

if you are required to provide very low capacity GIFs

You could use Photoshop to convert the MP4 to an amimated GIF as demonstrated in the video below:

You will have to use Ps to make an animated gif.
