Create a semi transparent mask from a colour matte?

Hi all. Trying to learn the use of masks. In this case I want to have my solid matte mask be semi transparent. To show graphic symbols on top of it.

So far I've created the mask and inverted it. 

But where to go from her?
You see the symbols barely showing to the left of his head?

I want this mask to be (a bit more elegant)  and a semi transparent colour matte. 
I have created the colour matte on the track beneath, but it doesnt show

Since there are several ways of making masks, I fear I have tried the wrong one. 
Any suggestions on where to go from here?
