Create a title based on the current title

Although I do wish to do this, my question is about clarifying the Adobe help documentation on this subject (Create and edit titles in Premiere Pro).

First, what version of Premiere Pro is this article written for?

Second, in this passage you use terminology I am unfamiliar with:

Create a title based on the current title

  • In the Titler, open or select the title on which you want to base a new title.
  • In the Title Quick Properties panel, click New Title Based On Current Title .
  • In the New Title dialog box, enter a name for the new title and click OK.
  • Change the new title as desired.
  • Close the Titler or save the project to save the title.

What is the Titler... is it the title panel that opens when the Premiere Pro main "Title" option is clicked?

Where is the "Title Quick Properties panel"? It this inside the Titler panel?

I have a "New Title Based On Current Title" option here: Premiere Pro main menu: Title > New Title > New Title Based On Current Title. Does this send me to the same place as your help instructions above? I am using Premiere Pro CC 2015.3

When I select a title in the project panel then select main menu: Title > New Title > "New Title Based On Current Title" it is good to go, but in clicking on that option no other panel opens... all it does is close the menu drop-down selections and ignore my request. If I select the title to use to create a new title from on the Sequence timeline, the "New Title Based On Current Title" option is grayed out in the menu list.

Either your help page was not written with version 2015.3 in mind (not stated), or your choice of terminology is not to previous conventions. I figure "titler" is an abbreviation of title panel... but are unsure if the "Title Quick Properties panel" is inside it or somewhere else. I hope you can enlighten me as it is very frustrating finding instructions you can't follow...

It's the panel for creating titles in Premiere. If you click "New...Title" this is where you'll be.

Where is the "Title Quick Properties panel"? It this inside the Titler panel?

It's off to the upper left; the icon looks like a little "film strip."

I have a "New Title Based On Current Title" option here: Premiere Pro main menu: Title > New Title > New Title Based On Current Title. Does this send me to the same place as your help instructions above? I am using Premiere Pro CC 2015.3

New Title Based on Current Title takes the title you're working on (and all of its attributes, layout, etc.) and saves it to a new title -- essentially a "save as" because you give each title a name. I used this option frequently when I had multiple names to put into a lower-third graphic title...so the workflow is: (a) create your first title in the format you want to use repeatedly...(b) click the "new title based on current title" icon, name it, and change it to the include the new text, etc. Repeat this process to create all similarly-styled titles in your project.

This is slightly different in newer versions of Premiere Pro since titles are handled differently. I hope this helps you accomplish your goal. Please let us know!

Thanks Buck, but I still have problems. Everytime I select File > New > Title, a new title Video Settings and Name box opens. When I click OK it closes while opening my titler panel. It opens in its own window on my Mac, shown here.

I can not find the "Title Quick Properties panel" here.

I can click on the "templates"tool to open the Templates window, however the only options available are User Templates, of which there is only one old one and "Title Designer Presets" which are empty.

It does have a menu with an option to "Import Current Title as Template", but the current title it picks up on is the incomplete one above, from which the templates tool was invoked from.

However that is another problem I am having. My initial problem is that I can't get the "New Title Based On Current Title" option shown below to work. If it is not Greyed out then it should do something, however it doesn't. It just closes the menu without opening any titler window...

Wait a minute... I may have found the answer. The titles I am selecting are in my project panel, but are not saved as individual files anywhere (PP generated text). I think I might have to export them to a folder, then re import them as .prtl media asset files. Perhaps then I can select them as the files to enable the "New Title Based On Current Title" functionality to work.

This would have to be an experiment to see if I am on the right track here. It certainly is not mentioned in the Adobe support help pages I read... It is not surprising that changes are being made to this function of Premiere Pro in releases after 2017. I am currently on 2015.3—I believe I must upgrade my OS for the latest Adobe CC upgrades.

OK I did the experiment, alas it failed. The only place I can find the "New Title Based On Current Title" option is on the main menu—Title selection list. It is not presented on the File > New > Title—options, nor from the "New Item" button of the project panel. It just does not do anything when selected.

I found a work around, but that involves exporting and reimporting as a template. However that does not solve the problem of why the "New Title Based On Current Title" option does not work.
