Create New Project in Most Recent PP Update??????

Why can't I just create a new project, choose a location, and then import media, like always? So simple! I have NOOOOO clue as to how to create a new project. I end up with a jumble of files I don't want in my project. I have NO IDEA how to select media. I don't want to create a sequence. I want to create my sequence as I go along.

Correct answer Jeff Bugbee

You can do exactly that. Launch Premiere, click New Project,  type your project name in the top left, choose your project location next to that, and click Create in the lower right. You'll have a brand new blank project to import your media in the "classic" way. No need to import before creation.

It's one of the worst ux/ue speedbumps I've seen. Absolutely dunder-headed design by the premiere team. It always makes me cringe.

Please give the problems you see, or your post is sadly wasted. Without specifics, no way of knowing what bothers you.

It's different for sure ... and as a replacement for the old new project dialog, where most people paid no attention to the many options, this one has intriguingly had a lot of objections to the options replacing the options they never paid attention to.

So ... what bums your load? We all have preferences, please add them to the discussion.

While it's weird to look at, at first, It did bring back some ingesting capabilities we haven't had really since they dumped Prelude. And it's a great way to add complex/spanned media to a current project. So it does have capabilities not existing elsewhere in Pr or harder/slower to get to.

I know most peole don't realize that ... I didn't either.

I've not created a new Premiere Project in years... and I just wasted way too much time trying to find out how to do that due to this "new" create project dialog box (apparently its 2 years old). WHY THE HELL IS IT SOOOOOO DAMN COMPLICATED? I've been using Resolve for the last few years and didn't realize how absolutely stupid Adobe had gotten with their dialog boxes when you open their software. Oh, and considering this thread is over 2 years old, and they've changed nothing, its apparent they don't listen to their customers.

It isn't complicated. It's simple.

Type Name.

Select Location.

Click Create.

Done, as before.

AND ...as before, there are other options. Did you ever pay any attention to all the other options of the old New Project Dialog? I doubt it. But ... there were several very complex options in that dialog also.

But you already knew how the old one worked, so ... you didn't think about them.

The new one takes a minute or two to puzzle out the first time. As the old one did. Big ... whoop.

You wanna talk complicated? Let's talk ... Resolve. Take a look at the new project items you've got there! Vastly more complex than Premiere. And yes, as I work for/with/teach pro colorists, have for years, I spend a LOT of time in Resolve.

The new "import" page is different, but heavily used by many professional editors ... so MILLIONS of users do not find it a problem, but a tool. I've not been one using any of the features personally.

But even I have learned two darn useful functions for that Import page.

  • The ability to do some copy/transode on import similar to a few functions that were part of Prelude.
  • The quick and accurate addition of spanned media clips into current projects without needing to use the MediaBrowser panel.

And yes, whaddaya know ... it does have some spiffy features. Huh. But then, I already had learned that many corporate in-house video production teams, TV newsrooms and such, love love love the Import page.

Umm..that was two years ago., long since understood with many many videos under my belt later. Why the shaming and condescending attitude?

Does this make you feel better as a person?

The new procedure for creating a project involves an unnecessary number of steps, a hidden tick box, greyed-out options, and a menu that, while it may appear aesthetically pleasing, is incredibly frustrating and time-consuming for users.

That is an option that you may or may not find useful. If not, don't.

Do as before ... type a Name, set the project Location, make sure nothing in the middle "media" section or the options upper right are selected (that's sticky, de-select once, don't worry about it again) ... click Create.

It's a bit different than the "old" way of say 2021, in that the options are different. The look is different. And for those who need fast quick project creation like TV newsrooms and such, it's been a great help. I've talked with some who found it a HUGE benefit.

It's not something I expect to ever use much. Name/Location/Create, and I go to the Project panel or MediaBrowser to add assets.

Although on the Facebook pro editors page, one pretty hot editor noted that he's actually found it incredibly useful when he's adding media to a current project, especially "spanned files" ... that it does a really good job of getting those complex files into Premiere correctly.

Fascinating, but I don't work with spanned files much.

I had the same issue and it took me a while but I figured out. Somehow I had selected multiple folders and I couldn't create the project. Check in the lower left if you have folders selected, Right-Click and Clear All. Then you should be OK to create project.

I work in UI/UX and this is TERRIBLE Adobe.

Hope this helps someone.

Add another to the utterly confused list.  What a terrible implementation and that import dialog makes my machine absolutely crawl when I try to select media.  Half the time I have to restart Premier because the create button is permanently greyed out.  Who thought this made things better?

As so often noted, do NOT use this for most workflows. We aren't and weren't expected to.

Type a Name ... select a Location for the project file ... click Create ... just as you did before.

And ignore the other options just as you did before in the old new project dialog.

And just like before, your new blank project opens up, and add assets via the Project panel or MediaBrowser as you always have.

This was a replacement of the group of rarely used options of the old dialog, with a process that is actually very slick for certain users. And again, designed to be used only by those users, not the rest of us.

For say TV newsrooms & such, this has been a godsend. Speeds the process every one of their short little projects they make by the bunch each day.

And doesn't affect the rest of us in any way I can see. Same process ... just different options to skip.

Oh wow. I was completely confused as well. The fact that this browser/import screen works horribly even when you DO want to use it, didn't help either. But I was completely lost. If your UI design causes people to have to search on forums for how to do the simplest task, your UI design failed. Don't they test these things with test users or something? Baffled.

Annnnnyway, thank you @Jeff Bugbee for the answer.

The devs thought it was a simple replacement of options no one used with a workflow that is actually quite spiffy for some ... such as newsroom work.

They actually expected the rest of us to realize we could skip it, and simply do the Name, Location, Create ... then build our projects in the ways we always have. Which ... well, yea, it wasn't as obvious as they thought ...

Thank you. Yes, very confusing, and not immediately intuitive.
