Creating a simple (legacy) title in Premiere Pro 2017.0

A submission requirement for my film is to show my name and the film's name at the beginning of the film.  My titles are at the end so I need to create a simple title at the head.  I consulted the Adobe Premiere pro user guide online on how to do this.  They say how to create the title, save it giving it a name, and then "Use the text and shape tools to create a file or to customize a template."  When the title comes up it is a gray box and when I try to type inside of it nothing happens.  How do you type your text?  Are there not more detailed instructions on how to use the Titler somewhere?

It looks like you are using Premiere Pro 2017.0.x, not 2017.1.x. If that's true, then your product is not the "latest" update and it not using the "latest" title tool. Just as well; the old one will do what you need! Since you are new to using it, check out this tutorial:

Choose Title > New Title > Default Still. (There shouldn't be any Academy leader appearing.)

What version of Premiere are you using? It sounds like you are working with the Legacy Titler. There's a newer way using Essential Graphics. does your submission require you to use the legacy or essential graphics titler?

The quoted text you presented leads to the following docs...

Those docs are for the legacy titler but there's a link at the top to the essential graphics docs...

For someone new to Premiere, the legacy titler is probably easier to work with. The text you quote "Use the text and shape tools to create a file or to customize a template" seems incorrect to me but maybe it's referring to something I've not used before... I've never created a file to create a title. Seems like a typo... maybe they mean create a title in a new project which you then save. I don't know but...

To create a legacy title just do...

  1. File/New/Legacy Title
  2. The legacy titler will pop up and a new item will appear in the project bin.
  3. The mouse cursor should be a text carrot with an arrow, click and drag that in the titler to create a space the size of your desired title... you can always change this after but you can drag to a guesstimate size for starters.
  4. Then then after you unclick there should be a blinking mouse cursor where you can type the text of the title. The legacy titler has options for font and all that.

The new essential graphics titling is not that difficult but it's just brand new and can be a little more quirky to navigate... the legacy titler creates a simple entity in the project bin you drag and drop like a clip where you want it. The essential graphics starts by creating a clip on the timeline which is not represented in the project bin... you can place it where you want.

I'm not sure but since the legacy titler has been around for ages, there may be lots of youtube videos on it versus essential graphics but there's likely online tutorials for both.

Thank you.  I am using Premiere Pro CC 2017.  I have no idea what the

Legacy Titler is.  I created a title several weeks ago and was able to

do so, typing in my name and film name as required.  The submission

requirement is simply that I provide that information in a title at the

head of my film.  When I create a title now, the title contains the

Academy leader even though I do not choose that option when I click on

Title, New Title.  So it's as if it wants to create a Title bused on the

current title even though I am not choosing that option.  My options

are: Default Still; Default Roll; Default Crawl; Based on Current Title;

and Based on Template.  If I select Based on Template the dialog box

that comes up is empty; there are 2 drop down arrows at the top left

that are User Templates and Title Designer Presets.  Any help would be

appreciated.  I don't understand why the option are different from when I

did this 2 weeks ago.
