Cross dissolve not working

Enthusiast ,
Mar 28, 2018 Mar 28, 2018

I have a Cross Dissolve at the end of a clip and one at the end of the previous clip but only one is working.

I tried several transitions at this location and none of them seem to be working.  I have transitions between other clips in this sequence and they are working, so what's going here?

One of the first things to check with cross-dissolve issues is do you have the necessary 'handles' on the clip ends at that editing point?

A 'handle' is extra frames either past or before the edit point ... for the clip in front, that would be extra frames past the cut; for the clip behind the cut, extra frames in front of the cut.

If you don't have handles, there's nothing to dissolve ...

The cross dissolve is working alright but you are not seeing anything as its using the same frames (handles) as the clip.

There is no point in adding a transition on a straight cut and doing nothing with that cut.

Turn on Show Through Edits under the wrench in the timeline.

Oh, that makes sense!  What I did was cut the clip and add a transition.

Thanks!

Ann's comment about turning on Show Through Edits ... is a real brain-saver on working with transitions. Highly recommended!

Me again on a Sunday..

I have these two clips that butt up to one another. I add the cross disolve transition, and it's 'center at cut' over both clips. And still nothing. It's a sharp cut. What gives?

Oh wait - I see the anomaly. So it's cross dissolving between these two different clipping masks I have on the two clips, but not dissolving the entire video. Somehow I need to 'embed' the clipping mask into video so that the whole thing can cross dissolve. Hope that makes sense.

I have not tried it yet, but I think it's possible to do if you nest the clips. Keep in mind, you have to have handles on the nest in order to do that as intended. That can be a little tricky. Let us know if you need help with the test, @SundayGladiator.

Yes indeed! Nesting the clip with the mask did the trick, and was able to get the cross dissolve to finally work.
