Custom mogrt not loading in premiere - media offline

Community Beginner ,
Sep 15, 2021 Sep 15, 2021

Hello! I am currently up to date on both AE (Version 18.4.1 Build 4) and Premiere Pro (Version 15.4.1 Build 6). I've also sent the mogrt to a coworker who had the exact same issue loading the template into premiere, so it's not my machine but something with the software or the template.

I made a couple small tweaks to an AE project - essentially adding several photo layers & editing the dropdown menu expression to reflect the changes. There weren't any errors with expressions or any missing media within AE, and I've exported using new file names and have tried saving in multiple locations (locally and externally)... yet I get the same result.

THE ISSUE: The mogrt installs into my local templates folder just fine (the thumbnail even shows me the preview) but once I drop it on the timeline it refuses to load and just says Media Offline. The previous version of this mogrt took about 3 minutes to load on the timeline... this one goes from "Loading 0%" to the loading bar disappearing instantly, like it doesn't even try, and I've even walked away from the project with the hopes that it was loading secretly in the background but nope.

I *really* don't want to have to make this template from scratch again, so any help is greatly appreciated. I reached out to my company's IT department and they were stumped as well.

Hi @danib813 and @alejdiaz

Ok we have some news form devs. A mogrt is essentially a zipped folder with another zipped folder inside called an .aegraphic that contains the .aep and related media needed to render the Mogrt in Premiere.  The issue is that on some systems Premiere is refusing to unzip the .aegraphic because it is over 2GB in size. Our actual limit is 4gb so this is a bug.

We're working on a fix and hopefully will have something in Beta soon. In the meantime, if you could find a

What are you using for image/background in the mogrt? Mo put a video file as a place-holder for a mogrt with video background with four thumbs that would animate in over it. All with video.

Some came through, some were "media offline" or pending. We got @DaciaSaenz to go through them, and one thing she suggested was using a png file as the placeholder in Ae. Though eventually she got it working for us.

Some things are a puzzlement ...

Hey Neil, thanks for answering!

So the mogrt in question has a background that animates in with a pre-rendered video (and masks), and then there are text layers along with images that transition in - the text layers and images can be swapped out using expressions.

The changes that I made were the addition of about 6 .png files and linking their opacity to the already existing dropdown menu expression. That was the only change... previous exports of this template loaded in without issue to Premiere Pro.

I can't emphasize enough how frustrating it is that premiere isn't even loading this thing when it's placed on the timeline, yet it imports just fine into the template folder and opens perfectly fine in AE (opening the exported template by itself).

How do you go about having an Adobe employee look at a project directly? I'm using a corporate license and our "designated contact for issues" didn't know what to do, so I'm stuck.

Thank you again for your support, I really really appreciate it!

We'll see if Dacia pops in, that's who I 'pinged' above. She's most awesome to work with.

In the case we had, it was only some video files that didn't want to load. But png files were not an issue.

Not sure if the exact same issue, but I no longer seem to be able to use any mogrts that have media replacement.  Everything exports fine (and works just fine in AE) and I can install into premiere but shows as "media offline" in Premiere no matter what I do.
I've even tried rebuilding the template from scratch step by step and testing it along the way and it seemed to be importing and working...until I add one of the layers to the essential graphics to allow for media replacement, then we are back to the red Media Offline joy.

I rolled back to 1.4.4 , and then 1.4.2, and nothing. Rolled back AE acouple of versions and no dice.
At this point I have no idea wtf is going on, other that I had to essentially abandon the idea of doing these templates as mogrts. I have randomly managed to export one that works, then the same one wont work on a new export without changing anything, and I've run out of time and energy to figure out the celestial alignment that makes them work.

What are you using for the placeholder files for the media replacement sections? I know Dacia had recommended to Mo and I to simply use png files in Ae for those.

I sent a direct message to Dacia yesterday with hopes that she'd lend a hand - I haven't heard anything back yet but if/when I do, I'll be sure to post here!

Hi Dani,

I really need the Mogrt itself to be able to diagnose what is going on.

Can you please send it to me?

Can you also tell me what platform you're on?

If you're on Windows, can you share the file path for what you have your Motion Graphics Template Media scratch disk folder saved to?

Thanks so much in advance,

Dacia

Media replacement was released in AE 18.0 and PR 15.0 so the feature and functionality does not exist in any version prior to this.

Hi Dacie,  yes that was a mistake on my part on the original reply, it's been a long night/day. I meant to say I rolled back Premiere to 15.4 and 15.2 (And After Effects to 18.4 and 18.2.1 respectively)

Cool! No worries I totally get that!

So lemme re-post my message that I sent Dani as it sounds like y'all are working together maybe?

Mac works great.png

Win_no files unpacked anywhere.png

Ay Dios Mio!

Geez.... We have a very interesting mystery on our hands. I'm able to use the Mogrt in Premiere Pro on Mac with no issues at all! The dropdowns work like a dream BTW! This isn't actually a Media Replacement Mogrt as there are no Media Replacement controls in it, which does make it a HUGE mogrt, and if you were to use MR then some things could be streamlined... but then you wouldn't have the awesome layout control and the text changes that are really cool! So amazing job on the Mogrt!

The problem is when we get to Windows. Its not unpacking in the temp folder that Tiny Inception AE:trade_mark:requires in order to see the .aep and any related media and where the "magic" happens.
Its also not unpacking in the Motion Graphics Template Media folder which is set up in scratch disk Project settings and also can be seen in the project panel. Both of these actions are required for a Mogrt to work, and for some reason Windows is blocking these actions.
I checked to make sure there weren't any illegal characters in any of the file names because Windows is very particular about this, but they all look good. 😭

SO! One of our devs is taking a look and opening it up in the debugger which is a little window into what is happening in the code base.

I promise to update as soon as I hear back from her.

In the meantime, I'm guessing its not possible to snag a Mac real quick is it 🤦🏽‍:male_sign:😬

I'm so sorry about this and thank you so much for bringing it to our attention.
I'll be back shortly with more news... fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Dacia

We're working on a fix and hopefully will have something in Beta soon. In the meantime, if you could find a way to optimize some of the media in the Mogrt (there is Background.mov that is almost a 1 GB in size that could maybe be transcoded into a different codec), drop a few images from the Mogrt, or split it in 2 versions with 1/2 the list of images in one and the other 1/2 in the second then you should be back in business.

The goal is to get it below 2gb.

Hope this helps and apologies for the all the stress,

Thank you @DaciaSaenz
Unfortunately in my case I feel the issue is something different, as the mogrts I am having issues with are tiny, I mean,  2kb level of tiny. I will go through and remove all client branding and materials which could get me in trouble and see if I can export a problematic version of it and share it here.

Yes, please send me a version of your Mogrt so we can try and figure out what is going on.

Hi Dacia,

I'm having the same issue with mogrts.  They are small in size and they keep bouncing offline. When I try to link the aegraphic file, Premiere Pro can't find it, but when I go to the Motion Graphics Template Media folder, the aegraphic that's being used by Premiere is in there. I can't find a solution!
