Question

Did the new update fix playback of long GOP files like Mp4 for anyone?

I downloaded the new update, and briefly played back some big mp4 files i have in a project.

It seemed A LITTLE more responsive, but still takes at least half a second to a second to play them in the source monitor.

Has anyone seen an improvement?

It is a bit more responsive...my mp4 plays back instantly, no delays. But then I'm playing back on an iMac Pro - mid level machine - with very fast thunderbolt 3 SSD drives.

I tested my h.265 4K footage that would not play at 2x speed with 14.0.1.  With14.0.2 it will play fine at 2x.  It drops frames but plays well.

I bet if you play the file in Resolve 16...it will play perfectly and not drop frames. Premiere still needs to catch up. But this may also depend on the speed of your hard-drive and/or computer.

Not sure if it fixed that… But last night I did pound on it… Adding sapphire plug-ins, blurs, multi layers… Trying to make it crash… And it did not crash at all. It was rocksolid. And the performance seemed to be better. I hate to draw a conclusion when only using it for one night… But it seems like a step forward. Thank goodness! Tonight I'm gonna throw some 5K into it… See if it handles it as well as Resolve does.

and after all these years, it still can't solo a video later. I think that's pretty insane. But oh well.

This should go without saying, but make sure you're doing all this from a locally attached SSD or faster drive. I see far too many posts on here about "hey my 4k footage lags when playing from this thumbdrive, I hate Adobe! fix it!"

No problem. All my external drives are Thunderbolt 3 super fast SSD drives. I never leave home without them.

I believe they metioned that playback of H.264/H.265 material had been improved in this release. Make sure you delete your media cache if you're updating a previous project.

That said, Long GOP formats are generally lousy for editing (especially if 4K or above). Transcode to a better mezzanine codec or else make proxies for the best performance.
