Question

Disc authoring

So, just learned this morning that Encore cs6 is no longer just end of life, but it can't be installed in creative cloud, and adobe has even revoked the license for people who have it installed.

How... uh... are we supposed to, you know, author discs?

John, that list is so far out of date it's just not even funny.

Suitable replacement will depend 100% on the intended results. If this is for sale, then it must be replicated (pressed from Glass Master) or else you cannot legally sell it as a Blu-ray disc as BD-R is under the BD-ROM spec books and written discs are considered as non compliant media and therefore cannot carry or be described as "Blu-ray Disc" and anybody who actually sells BD-R as Blu-ray is asking to have Sony hit them with a Cease & Desist order followed by a stock destruction order if labelling & packaging cannot be changed.

This kinda limits what you can do, so please be careful.

DoStudio no longer exists. Sony bought NetBlender out, and then closed it down at the same time they closed down Sony Creative Software.

Blu-Disc Studio is personal use only - not for retail use at all as it is hopelessly inadequate

Everything else on that list - with the sole exception of Blu-Print - is not good enough for commercial use simply because commercial pressings require the use of Mandatory AACS so-called "Copy Protection" and there are 2 ways to handle this - either your client needs an AACS license as a content owner or you need one as an authoring house. We use the former option - licensing myself for AACS is just too damned expensive and I would get no change out of £15,000 - spec books have to be bought as part of it at £5k each & there are three of them. Add to this the actual licensing costs themselves and for me it just was not worth the money. If I were Disney then yes.

Encore on Mac was able to do AACS by virtue of an add-on tool that takes the Encore output & format it for the Replication Master (I don't recall the developer offhand but I am assured by those who know this method works perfectly but the addon is Mac only - kinda ironic given there are no authoring tools for Mac OS.

Another option is Scenarist BD - they do a licensing deal too, and are still developing Scenarist BD and Scenarist SD, with Seamless Branching being added recently.

Also - this is really important - the only way you will get this done on Mac OS is to install a Windows Partition, and run it on that - it is simply not Mac compatible - and for that you can thank Steve Jobs, and not blame Scenarist.

Trouble is this will invalidate the Apple Support......

So - if you can please let me know what OS you run and what your target disc type is, I will point you in the best direction for getting the job done.

Personally speaking I think Adobe should get talking to Scenarist LLC and relicense the AuthorCore.

I have the serial number version of CS6 so had not personally clicked any of those links

A different list List of DVD authoring software - Wikipedia

And it is still wrong.

Sonic went out of play years ago when Rovi closed them down (which is why Encore died) and although the staff ended up buying the rights back, it is no longer called "Sonic" - it is now Scenarist LLC and their website can be found right here

Their old DVD Creator is long, long dead - it was their Mac tool and required hardware to decode MPEG-2 video in real time. Gone for years now, as is DVDit PPro (which actually came from the same authorcore as Encore did)

Scenarist SD still exists and is still being developed as is Scenarist BD.

For cheap work, MuxMan is good for SD although recently I have been unable to actually download the package as it simply gives me garbage instead of a download link. Trying to ascertain whether or not it is still actually a going concern - it did have a wonderful mux engine.

For serious work, Scenarist & DVD-Lab Pro 2 is about all there is these days and it is not as dear as you may think.

Encore CS was EOL a long time ago.

If you have a perpetual license (disk/ED and serial number) you can still use it.

Otherwise you need to look elsewhere.

DVD or BD?

Moved to Encore

Blu-ray.

So, yeah, it's been end of life for the better part of a decade, but the official line on authoring was, if you need it, install cs6 and run Encore.  That's no longer an option.  Feeling pretty deserted by adobe here.
