The pro apps tend to assume you want to control things and don't always have full effects including the kitchen sink with all the plumbing included. Plus there are effect sets from Red Giant and so many other places t hff st work in PrPro.
What makes a sound distant?
Well ... it isn't as distinct, is it? You don't hear nearly the upper sibilant sounds. There's maybe frequencies here and there a bit off also.
There's more echoes also, distant ones. But everything is relative ... there need to be if possible closer sounds.
So, going into a frequency analyzer and rolling off the frequencies above say 10k, maybe grabbing a couple other narrower bands, places around 1500 and 300Hz, pulling those back a small amount of it takes some distinctiveness off that voice.
Adding a small amount of large hall reverb. I even saw a demo where someone did a small amount of large ball and a smaller amount of small ball reverb to get a more realistic range of "echoing". Maybe try that.
Is there anything for a sound that would be realistic in that clip/scene that would be closer? Adding a hint of walla (inside) or sighing breeze (outside) that are less indistinct even though barely hearable might help push your main track back and away.
