Question

DNG sequence from 10GbE NAS extremely slow, but not in other programs!

We purchased a brand new 10GbE - Enterprise QNAP 16-bay 100 TB storage which would replace our 'old' 12 Bay 36 TB Accusys Raid.

After I copied everything over from the Accusys Raid to the QNAP (with CRC-check) we could finally test the system.

Booted Premiere Pro CC 2017 and the project loads really fast, but then froze with some items remaining to load, this then took approx. 15 minutes to fully load.

I've discovered that the problem is in all the DNG-sequence's from the BlackMagic Camera. But only if this DNG-sequence is located on a Network share.

When located on the Accusys RAID (DAS), the thumbnail of the DNG-sequence is generated in seconds and the exact same project loads in seconds instead of taking forever.

Please note that the QNAP is very fast, connected via 10GbE and is reaching speeds of 1000 MB/s. The Accusys does approx 1200 MB/s.

If I open the same DNG-sequence in Davinci Resolve, it loads just as fast from the QNAP NAS compared to the Accusys, so it's definitely not something wrong with the QNAP. I even tried a 1 GbE link to a Synology, and Media Browser in Premiere Pro CC 2017 also can not read the file or generate a thumbnail. Just sits there 'Reading..".. It look likes it's trying to read all the DNG's in the folder via a NAS. But understands it is a image sequence when using a local drive like the Accusys.

So the problem is Premiere Pro correct? How it handles DNG sequences on a Network (NAS).

Even if I create a brand new project, the behavior is the same.

I can import the DNG-sequence fairly quick by importing the first frame, but then the project takes forever to load on next boot.

Any ideas?

Premiere Pro does not properly handle CinemaDNG footage.  The access to RAW controls is severely limited, and there is a LUT applied by default which we cannot change or remove.  I have taken to learning Resolve, which handles CinemaDNG perfectly.

I would recommend the same for you.
