Got around to installing Premiere 2018, only to discover that my decade+ old camera records audio in AC3, so, no audio. Luckily, I kept my old version. Nice to have to either upgrade my OS or buy a new camera in order to be able to utilizes subscription software.

I would recommend upgrading to Windows 10.

You'll have to eventually.  This is as good a reason as any to do so.

Certainly less cost than a new camera.

Some camera's have the option to set audio to PCM.

I envy those who have one.

AVCHD can be enough of a pain to work with, that many try to avoid it when possible. Even from cams that give you that as the only or best quality option, one can do a transcode to a different codec on uploading or prior to ingesting into PrPro. I know Handbrake can do this, and I'd set that to go to "near-placebo" on the compression settings to keep best quality.

Batch process overnight or while at lunch or doing other stuff. I do this with my phone media, so when I load it into PrPro I've kept quality but have (in that case) CFR media to edit. Then I make Cineform proxies on ingestion.
