Dolby Atmos and 5.1 in CS5.5

New Here ,
Jan 29, 2018 Jan 29, 2018

Hi, try to make it short and sweet:

1. import a ready-made 5.1 soundtrack into Premiere, will it still last after the final export in the 5.1, or is it reduced to the 2.1?

2.  any experiences with Dolby Atmos and Premiere?

Thanks for comments, Kim

Kim,

Which version of Premiere Pro are you using? And which operating system (Windows or OSX) and version of it is your computer system running?

If you are using the new Premiere Pro CC 2018.x or the currently available 11.1.4 version of CC 2017, be advised that these newer versions cannot export audio as Dolby Digital AC3 at all without paid third-party plugins. And these newer versions of Premiere Pro CC have no AC3 decoder at all, instead relying on the operating system's native support for AC3 decoding. And only Windows 8.1 or later, or OSX 10.11 or later, have native AC3 decoding support.

And the audio will remain as 5.1 in the editor, but depending on the export format and preset may downmix the 5.1 audio to 2.0 (stereo) by default on export.

And Dolby Atmos is too new for most NLEs to support. You see, the development of an NLE actually takes many years even from the most experienced and reputable of software engineers. Thus, no computer system or software currently supports Dolby Atmos to the best of my knowledge.

Randall

You *can* edit immersive audio in pretty much any NLE. You won’t get true objects like Dolby Atmos but I suspect most Atmos audio is 5.1.4 or 7.1.4.

What deliverable do the clubs require? I’d start there and work backwards. (eg I have a 5.1.8 deliverable, delivered as XAVC Class100 with 14 discrete channels.)

You’ll need to get setup with a multichannel sequence & figure out bussing your timeline tracks to outputs, and how are you planning on monitoring the mix?

Thank you Randall,

I work with a "old" version, CS 5.5, too. Here, it is easy to set the tracks. Win10 crashed my DAW programs, now I am working with the win7, again. I never tried win8, may be I have to try. There is a VST for Dolby Atmos, but

1. nobody told me, if it is working fine,

2. the vast majority of cinemas support 5.1 and 7.1, only a few of them go with the Atmos systems.

But, the clubs "serve" Atmos to their customers, more and more.

I sent a message to Dolby, hopefully, they answer. If so, I let you know.
