DV capture not working

Trying to grab some footage from some old mini-dv tapes using on a iMac Pro with premiero pro 2022 and a Sony DSR 40. Yes, archaic, I know. But, the footage was shot on mini-DV tape in 2007 and I'm trying to use it in a project I'm working on now. I can control the player in the capture mode and hear the audio on tape, but I do not see the video. Why?

iMovie sees this stuff no problem. Even QuickTime sees this stuff. Why not Adobe Premiere? Disappointing. I ended up using New Movie Recording in QT to capture the video while manually starting and stopping the tape. What a drag. It's 2022 this shouldn't be.

Thank you Ann.  Can you elaborate on what you mean by 1:1 - not sure what exactly you are refering to.

Also saw your post on older versions of Premiere and making sure to have "Show Older Apps" checked.  That may have been an older post/scenerio because even with it selected the oldest version for Premiere is still 22.  I can capture DV with current system but need v 12 or 13.

Many Thanks!

That happens because the official Adobe support policy is that only the current and previous major versions of a Creative Cloud app are available to be installed by the Creative Cloud app. Because version 24 of Premiere Pro was just released, the Creative Cloud app now provides versions 24 and 23 for installation. Next year, if they release version 25, the installer will drop 23 and you will only be able to install 25 and 24.

You might be able to find an installer for the supported versions at prodesigntools.com.

The answer may be in this Adobe document that came out a few years ago:

Changes to GPU and DV/HDV support in Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder on macOS

quote

Starting with macOS 10.15 Catalina, Premiere Pro no longer supports DV and HDV capture over FireWire.

A big thank you - should have researched a bit before installing new OS... Was not in the middle of anything just attempting to "upgrade" and made some assumptions.

I had posted a question just today as well and recieved roughly the same reply. Have used my Windows machine with Premiere 2014 for years.  It has a FW capture card that I connect either a DV deck or older DV camera to - no issues ever.  Decided to "upgrade" so installed Premiere 2022 on 2019 iMac and now cannot capture.  Now I know why.  Many thanks for the response.

I have very old version of FCP and may install to just capture.  However, I also read that some use iMovie to capture with no issues and then use data in PremPro.  I realize iMovie does not produce the quality of Premiere but wondering if captured media is same quality with iMovie??  Any thoughts.

Capturing from tape is 1:1.

Unfortunately this seems to be how Premiere is on this operating system on the Mac. I've been capturing from DV and HDV through IMovie on the Mac and then taking the footage into Premiere after capturing.

Thanks Rob. Think I'm going to give LifeFlix a try.
