Embedding Closed Captions not an option on file formats that support them?

Am I crazy... there seems to be NO WAY to enable embedding closed captions on certain file formats. I have 708 captions in my file and I'm trying to prep my spots for TV and Cable, the captions show up in Media encoder, I can pick embed (but only on MXF files as far as I can tell)... after exporting the Captions are not there. WTH?

And why does only MXF list embed captions in Media encoder? Mpeg2 supportsembedded captions, why can't I add them? Pro Res supports embedded captions... nothing! I think Mp4 supports them, but not in Media encoder!

COME ON ADOBE!! DO BETTER.

EDIT: Just re-read an realized that you neeed 708. My post only applies to 608.

Which Captions Format do you have set in the Caption Track Settings dialog box?

The options that appear later under the Captions tab when in the Export dialog box are determined by this setting.

For example, if set to "Subtitle", then there will no option for "Embed in Output File" under the Captions tab in the Export Settings dialog box for QuickTime; however, if set to CEA-608 then there will be.

So, try setting that accordingly and you should be good.

sorry yes I do need 708, which from what I can tell is also the standard moving forward (I think?) Crazy that THIS is such a pain to make work when the software ecosystem can do all sorts of other amazing things!

This is the status and has been since Adobe added captions. Embeds for MXF and Quicktime, but 708 won't embed in PR Quicktime.

Upvote this feature request for adding embed to mpeg. You'll see by the comments that there are many others who feel as you do.

You'll see the one staff comment there from 2019, but the request is not assigned any status (such as "In progress" or "Under review").

The only workarounds are to use third party options to embed. See this thread re H.264 using Handbrake:

Sorry, I haven't heard of any update. CEA-708 in QuickTime and MPEG embedded Caption support are still on our radar, but no ETA.
