EVGA RTX 2070 poor performance on either NVIDA 411.63 or EVGA 430.64 drivers

I just purchased and installed the EVGA RTX 2070 08G-P4-2171-KR GPU on my old system: Gigabyte EX58-UD5 mobo, 1st gen i7 920 cpu, 24gb DDR3 ram.

Premiere 2019 Playback sputters and hangs worse when premiere is using the mercury playback engine RTX 2070 gpu than when on software only. It did not matter which driver was installed, either the EVGA recommended 430.64 driver or Adobe's recommended 411.63 CUDA 9.2 ODE drivers from NVIDIA.

I also have a GT 710 that's attached to my forth display.

Can someone help with ideas on what might be the problem?

Is it possible my old mobo and/or 1st gen cpu can't handle the new GPU?

I can't believe the new GPU is bad.

The most important part of a Premiere build is the CPU/RAM/mobo setup. The GPU is only used when called on by the CPU.

That GPU so out matches that CPU/RAM/mobo the best thing to do with it is make it the start of a new rig.

@

based on all i've read so far i believe your correct.   Sadly - only because i'm going to be spending about a 1k to get my rig up to speed.  In addition, RjL190365 may also have a point about the GT 710 dragging down the performance. I'll remove it and report on the results.

My recommendation would be to have a single GPU installed, and use a dedicated I/O device for monitoring.

It's not your new GPU. It's actually a combination of your ancient CPU platform and your GT 710 that's dragging down the performance. You see, in this case Adobe will use BOTH GPUs for GPU acceleration - and it will only perform at the same level as your WEAKER GPU (the GT 710), in this instance.

@ RjL190365,

It is the same as putting race car tires under a deux cheveau.

I agree your system needs a refresh.  That GPU is not being served well by a First Gen i7 CPU.  Premiere likes high frequency CPUs, say closer to 5Ghz vs the less than 3Ghz you are running at.  I'm running a GTX 980 with a current gen AMD Ryzen 2700X and my playback on 4k footage is mostly fine with Cuda acceleration on.  I'm running into other issues with such an old card and going to upgrade this weekend though.

That said have you tried the latest Creator Ready drivers?  Nvidia recently switched to offering a Gaming Driver set and Creator Driver set.  I haven't see many reports of it actually making a difference but it is supposed to be better optimized for use in the Creative Cloud and other workstation uses.  The current Revision is 419.67.  I would ignore whatever Adobe recommends for drivers or hardware, they do not keep up with how rapidly the PC Hardware landscape changes.

Drivers | GeForce <- Under the last option there is "All", "Recommended", "Beta", and the last one "Creator Ready Driver".  I'd give that a try.

@ Mandicreally,

Yes, i discovered the Creator Ready drivers option and installed it.  I'm not sure if it helped at all but i need to remove the GT 710 to see if it's dragging down the performance of the RTX 2070.  I'll report the results shortly.
