Can I use the Export Frame button (the small camera button underneath the viewport) to export a frame with a transparent background?
Yes, make sure the Program monitor is toggled to display transparency by click on the wrench in the lower right of the Program Monitor and checking on Transparency Grid, then export in a format that supports transparency such as .png.

I understand all that. But the Export Frame button doesn't let you control the type of graphic you want to export.

Stupid me. I just saw the menu for choosing the format as I pressed the button. Can you believe I never realized there was a menu there in several years of using the software.
