Fading Masked Layers

Alright so there's got to be an obvious easy solution to this. In Adobe Premiere, I have my primary video layer that I'm fading in from black, but then I add a small masked layer covering up a spot...all good except for when I go to fade that layer mask in from black too. An off-opacity spot appears through the transition where the mask is. The mask is fine after the fade is complete. What am I missing here?

Ahhh! I didn't even know about nesting. That's perfect, thank you.

In cases like this I put a layer of black above the video and do the fade on the black.

That's an easy workaround, thank you! Any other solutions?
