Question

Footage out of focus when encoding for dvd

Hi

I have a 1920x1080 timeline that when is encoded for mpeg2-blu ray looks perfect but when I select mpeg-dvd for production of dvd's the image is out of focus.

The image itself is a still, about 500k so not very hi-res at all, but it looks fine encoded for blu-ray .

I did the same exercise with a piece of 1920x1080 footage, and, as expected it looks the same whether encoded for dvd or blu-ray

Without having to change my source material, which is a big job, anyone got any ideas why this is happening, my thoughts are if ok in blu ray why not dvd?

This is the first time, I have worked on a project that needs both dvd and bluray output. The sequence settings are all 1920x1080 as the sequence has mixed footage, both hd video and low res still pictures.

Many thanks

Chris

I'm staggered by the community's indifference to this issue.

Adobe, the alpha and omega of digital media developing, doesn't, in fact, have a solution for quality DVD output.

    No one cares.

    I must be missing something.

I never had any trouble making dvd with Premiere and Encore.

And yes there are better encoders out there.

Does this look blurry and washed out.

    Made in 2009.

    Original HDV footage.

On a side note you should not watch dvd footage full screen on a 1920x1080 or larger screen.

And you cannot compare a home made dvd with a professional Hollywood made dvd.

The encoders probably cost more then the average years income.

Hi Chris, did you ever figure out the DVD softness issue? I have the same problem. People seem not to understand that it's soft not when you blow it up back to HD size, which is understandable, but it is soft at its SD size, which is weird because as you shrink a picture its sharpness should increase.

Besides shrinking the picture it also gets encoded to dvd spec. That is not the same as just shrinking hd in sd on the timeline.

    Ann,

the bitrate I use for Blu Ray is 25 Mbps, so 25M/1920/1080 = 12 bits/pixel including audio

The bitrate I use for DVD is 8 Mbps, so 8M/720/480 = 23 bits/pixel including audio

With essentially 1.5—2x the bitrate, why does DVD image look 4 times as crappy in its native size, not when blown up to HD size?

What are you using to view the DVD? That can affect the quality as well.

If you're playing a DVD fullscreen on a 27-inch iMac at the default display resolution (which is 2560x1440), it won't look nearly as sharp as if it were playing on a PAL TV and also not as sharp as  a Blu-Ray disc.

DVDs will be soft compared to Blu-ray.  Even Hollywood movies suffer that reality.

First of all use H.264 Bluray for BD, its a better codec then mpeg2 Bluray.

    Use a preset.

DVD is what it is Standard Definition and not High Definition. You cannot change that.

Your footage does not get out of focus but tends to look soft.

Dont look at the file size but at the length of the timeline

About 1.5 hours will fit nicely on Bluray or DVD.

Thanks for your reply. It is not just soft but badly out focus. I have a related problem. If I export (media encloder)  the 1 hour timeline to H264 bluray or mpeg-dvd, my footage gets cropped top/bottom/right/left.I can see this in the preview screen in ME.

    If I divide the 60 minutes by say 6 (ie mark in/out on timeline)  x 10min exports I don't???

    I select 16:9 each time

So I could export the 6 files. I assume I can add this on the encore timeline 1 after each other without any issues? I have asked this specific question on the encore forum but thought I would mention it here for completeness

Any ideas anyone, need to get this job don't for tomorrow night!)

    Thanks

Can you post a screenshot of your export and sequence settings?
