HEVC Files Won't Import

Having trouble importing your HEVC files?

HEVC files are currently supported for import, so the first step I would take is to find out why they are not importing into your machine.

  • HEVC files are fully supported in versions 12.0.1 and later with the .mov and .mp4 extension
  • Premiere Pro and Media Encoder must both be updated to 12.0.1 or later.
  • Make sure to be running macOS 10.13 and greater on Mac and 1809 above on Windows 10.
  • If you are running a trial version on the Windows platform then the CPU needs to be 6th Gen and greater for 8 bit media & 7the Gen greater for 10 Bit HEVC.
  • Manually Delete all Media Cache.
  • Windows users should update the Intel Display Card drivers if the computer system has more than one display Card.
    • If there is more than one display card, then update their respective display card drivers, as well.
  • If the HEVC is 12 bit, 422, or 444 HEVC files and you cannot import, ensure that that the HEVC codec is installed.
    • Windows : Users\Public\Documents\AdobeinstalledCodecs
    • Mac : Users\Shared\ AdobeinstalledCodecs

If you still can't import these files even to transcode them in Media Encoder, file a bug here.

Hi Abhishek,

I appreciate your response.  I have tried cleaning the media cache and then importing the files, but to no avail.

I have downloaded Handbrake and am using that to change whatever's wrong with the format and using those clips instead.

I appreciate the offer of taking a look at the file, but I am unable to share it for proprietary reasons.

Thanks again,
Kent

I'm fairly new to Premiere Pro/Media Encoder CC, so I wanted to ask a question before I file a bug report.

I'm running Premiere Pro 13.1.2 and Media Encoder 13.1 on a Windows 10 Enterprise machine with a Xeon Silver 4114 CPU at 2.2 GHz with 32 GB of RAM and a Radeon Pro WX 7100 graphics card.

I have security camera videos that are mp4 files.  When I try to import them into either Premiere Pro or Media Encoder CC, it tells me the compression type is unsupported.

The video specs are:

Format : HEVC

Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding

Format profile : Main@L4.1@Main

Duration : 29 s 82 ms

Width : 960 pixels

Height : 1 080 pixels

Display aspect ratio : 0.889

Frame rate : 60.000 FPS

Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:

0 Bit depth : 8 bits

Color range : Full

Color primaries : BT.709

Transfer characteristics : BT.709

Matrix coefficients : BT.709

The audio specs are:

Format : MPEG Audio

Duration : 29 s 40 ms

Compression mode : Lossy

Delay relative to video : 32 ms

I have tried changing the file extension to m4v with no change in results in either program.

I am smart enough to realize that I don't know whether the audio format is what's causing the problem (as mentioned above with the AIF vs AAC bullet).

Should these specs work with either Premiere Pro CC or Media Encoder CC or do I need to submit a bug report?

Thanks.

Hi kentc3458598

Premiere Pro 13.1.2 can import HEVC 8 bit,10 bit, 444 & 422 files, the mentioned HEVC file should work. Premiere also support Hardware decoding for 8bit and 10 bit .mov and mp4 HEVC files for both Mac and Windows for both trial and paid subscribers.

You can check processor compatibility here

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000029338/processors.html

if your CPU does not support hardware decode then also premiere decodes HEVC file using inbuilt decoder.

Note - in-build decoder support is only for paid subscribers of Premiere Pro.

Please try to clean media cache and try to import the file again if you are still facing issues then please share your copy of file so that we can test it on local system.

Regards

Abhishek
