How do I use the little hand with the arrows?

I'm very new to Premiere Pro. I am using the effects control and I want to adjust the 'position' parameter in motion effects. When I click in the 'position' boxes, I can manually type in a number, which is laborious if I just want to play around with the position. I noticed that when I hover over the position numbers, a little hand appears with an arrow on the right and left sides of the hand. On youtube I see people very quickly changing the numbers with this little hand and arrows, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. I am using a 2020 macbook pro.

Hey,

Welcome to the community! Could you try left-clicking on the position field, and while keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag the mouse towards the left or right? The value should change as you do so. You can get the same results by dragging the mouse up or down. If you keep the Command button pressed, the values should change at a slower pace.
