How to create a rectangular mask using the Pen Tool in the tool palette (Premiere Pro 2022)?

I have drawn a rectangle using the Pen Tool in the Tools Palette. I am trying to use it as a mask in a clip or photo. I select the rectangle, then click the Shape item in the Effects Control.  There is an option to "Mask with Shape".  It does not create a mask of the rectangle, instead it changes the rectangle's fill to 0 opacity (so it disappears).
I also had an Adobe Support Technician try to help me and he experienced the same thing.

If this is not working .. . . Does ANYONE know how to use Pen Tool shapes as a mask?
BTW:  I do not want to use the Opacity rectangle tool because you have to independently move the corner points, making it almost impossible to line up exactly to create a perfect rectangle. It wouldn't be so bad if the point snapped to the guides, but they dont?!?

Hover over a point and drag.

Mask with shape only works within the EssGr.

You need to add an image or clip.

As for a regular mask from the Effects Controls you can lasso two corners and drag one of the points outward and hold down shift for straight line.

Thanks so much Ann for takin the time to reply!

[I was drew a Shape on the layer above my clip].

I noticed in your EssGr panel, I could see the clip listed under the Shape. In my EssGr panel I only have the Shape listed. How do I add the clip to the list?

BTW: I have a lot of rectangular masks to make in my project, just too time consuming to do with a polygon from the Effects control panel.

How do I add the clip to the list?

Just drag from the Project panel to the Ess Gr.

Why not use the mask feature from Opacity from the clip.

Or draw your (white) shape in the EGP and use the Track Matte effect?

Workflow depends on a what you are trying to achieve with all those masks.
