How to edit with markers

Community Beginner ,
Sep 27, 2025 Sep 27, 2025

Hi all:

I got Adobe Premiere Pro from work, last month, which they pay for.
As I am unfamiliar with this, I tried it out, but failed beyond anything, as the logic of this program is ... not there?

Example:
I loaded a song, to edit it.
I placed a marker where I want to begin copying, placed one where I wanted the part to end copying (thus, so that marker 1 = the beginning of the part to be copied, and marker 2 where it had to end the part to copy, copying all in between), but this does totally not work as such.
I got this "brilliant" idea:
Went on youtube to seek help on how to select a part, copy, and then past it.
But, guess guess, nowhere a video on this, instead I found bits and parts, stuff on:
- how to edit the shortcuts: I do not intend to edit any shortcut, knowing myself, I would likely delete the program.
- how to paste bits: a video where a fella with glasses begins, having ALREADY the selected bit ready, not explaining how he did it.
ETC.

I find it a bit sad, that the most logical way, just fails to work:
Marker 1, marker 2, and select what needed to be done with it.
Simple, intuitive, logical, rational, but no go.
I fail to get why, though, it could be that simple, even with video, and for adding text etc.

Now, and please, keep it simple ... I have severe ADHD, so, brain is very fast confused ... :
How do I selet a part from a song, copy it, and part it at where it has to be pasted in, please?

Thank you beforehand:
Annah.

If I understand what you are trying to do, you need to make cuts and then copy, not just add markers.

https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/edit-projects/trim-clips/cut-clips.html

If that's not it, can you post screenshots or a video explaining what you are trying to do?

But i fail to get, why Premiere does not use the markers as per how I siad afore.
It would make things a whole lot more intuitive and user friendly?

Markers are not cuts ... markers are places to mark for information about the clip.

Cuts are where you cut the clip into sections.

Totally different functionality, actually.

And a ton of things are like that in Non Linear Editors ... which Premiere, Avid, Resolve, and others are. Many things only become logical once you begin to understand the underlying basis.

Like ... you aren't dealing in images, like a stills app (think Photoshop). In video editing on an NLE, you are dealing with streams of images ... from 24 to 100 or more per second ... and the processing design therefore is absolutely from the ground up a different thing. It has to be built to play all those images sequentially with effects added. Several orders of magnitudes more load on the computer than a stills app.

And markers help give context to the stream while you are working on the sequence.

It's that kind of conceptual thing ... and there are many! ... that you need to grasp to really get going "naturally" in an NLE.

@R Neil Haugen
First of all, thank you for responding.

then:
"Markers are not cuts ... markers are places to mark for information about the clip."
Well, that is my point, exactly:
A marker can be multi-functional, not mere an information point.

Like I said in my first post, sir:
Marker 1, marker 2, and select what needed to be done with the inbetween selection.
Or, to make an information point, in the options.
That would be intuitive, i would think?
User friendly?
Since, it is what is done in other things, like say, woodwork, even in writing, often the case.
Why is that done with markers?
It is, I gues intuitive ... ?

There are so, so many options in Premiere, which could be "cut", or, simplified.
Which in turn would make it less hard to use.

What say you, sir?   ðŸ™‚

I wouldn't want a marker to do anything but mark.

I have a woodworking shop in my garage.  I use my pencil to mark.  I use my saw to cut.

@Peru Bob
Yes, what I said:
Mark to a begin, an end, or to add something, and then call the menu with left-click in the selected part, or the single marker?
I do not get your point, good sir?

Like I said above, there are actually solid reasons that it is this way, and many other things. There's already a ton of marker types, which is confusing to many starting out. A marker that cuts would simply add to the confusion.

And like nearly everything else in an NLE, there are several ways to make cuts. Which is a specific part of the process.

Such as ... simply hit the "C" key on the keyboard while in the Timeline panel, and the cursor becomes a razor, and shows where the cut would be on the sequence.

Hit the V key, you're back to able to grab and move things. As one of several possibilities.

I would say that since you are unfamiliar with Premiere Pro you should for now concentrate to learn how Premiere Pro works today and not how you want it to work today or yesterday.

For example, if you use an In Point and an Out Point you can already today choose "what needed to be done with the inbetween selection". So it seems that working with In/Out Points is what you are looking for rather than working with markers.

Cutting in Premiere Pro is easy today, you just have to learn how to do it and how many options there are when it comes to cutting.

@Averdahl
"I would say that since you are unfamiliar with Premiere Pro"
True.
I stated this in the first post, sir

"you should for now concentrate to learn how Premiere Pro works"
Which I am trying, sir.
Alas, my ADHD makes this a bit hard ... .  😞

"and not how you want it to work today or yesterday."
Well, I did not say, I want it my way, sir?
I gave an idea, and asked for your opinion on this idea.
I mean, not all people have a "Neurotypical" brain, see?
Like ... me ... I am different.
Very easily distracted, which makes things hard to learn.
And for people like me, I thought to give an idea, and see, if this would be liked?
Sometimes people make things a lot harder than actually needed.
And that is when I give some possible ideas, to help people such as myself.
I meant no harm, sir ... ?  😞

"In Point and an Out Point you can already today choose"
OH, this will surely help me out!
Thank you, sir.

Anna, welcome to the group!

I'm autistic, with all the uber-focus that can bring, exec function issues et al ... so like many in video post, thee & me have a lot of neuro-diverse companionship.

Averdahl is actually one of the best, knowledgeable, helper volunteers around these parts. And if we non-Neuro-Typical's expect some grace now and then from NTs, well, we also need to extend some to them. "We" are, like everyone, unique ... as 'they' are also.

I can guarantee Averdahl did not mean any disparagement ... and was sincerely trying to help. I suggest leaving behind any attempts to apply motivations behind comments on forums ... it just never helps that I can tell.

Past that, I can so sympathize with your trying to learn. For myself, I came out of a 25+ year stills pro studio career into digital pro stills back about 2001/2, going into Photoshop and when it came out, Lightroom public beta 2. Then in 2013, I went into some video production, but mainly video post work, specializing in color ... my uber-focus "native" thing.

Not editing, which should have been my main push. Ah well ... our biggest fight, for all humans, is actually with ourselves. I try to win occasionally but it's dang difficult.

After learning stills digital imaging, to a fairly high level ... I thought that most of my stills knowledge would apply to video post.

I was SO flippin' wrong on that! Video post has very, very little in common with still image post processing. And this was a hard thing for me to learn.

There are solid reasons there are certain underlying patterns to all NLEs, that are dramatically different from other types of apps. And in my experience, for those of us who learn more perhaps "conceptually" than most NTs do, it is a hard struggle to figure out the basics underlying the design and functions of the tools in an NLE.

So almost before learning how to do X in Premiere, it would probably be good to get a bit of reading in on the basic structure and functioning of an NLE as a process. For me, until I finally got that bit down, nothing made any sense.

@R Neil Haugen
"Anna, welcome to the group!"
Why thank you very much, sir!!!   ðŸ™‚

"Averdahl is actually one of the best, knowledgeable, helper volunteers around these parts."
I did not think otherwise, sir.  🙂

"And if we non-Neuro-Typical's expect some grace now and then from NTs, well, we also need to extend some to them."
Oh, absolutely!!!
What goes around, comes around, as they say.
But, now you make me doubt, good sir ... did I show any less, was I somewhere impolite?
I also have severe Asperger's ... which can make me appear as blunt or disrespectful, though I never mean to.  😞

"I can guarantee Averdahl did not mean any disparagement ... and was sincerely trying to help."
Oh, that I understood, sir, which I thought I expressed towards when I said:
"OH, this will surely help me out!
Thank you, sir."

"I suggest leaving behind any attempts to apply motivations behind comments on forums ... it just never helps that I can tell."
Uhm, and this is a serious question, as I do not quite see the logic in it ... :
... isn't motivating an idea what "sells" the idea?
I mean, if I made a suggestion, without ever motivating, or, explaining the reasoning behind it, how could one then see the value in it?
Example, pointing to the idea I brought forth:
If I left it at "Marker can be multi-tooled",  I think, it would be ... even ridiculous, no, good sir?
I am not the smartest, really, and aware of my ignorance ... :
In the whole that is the Universe, and that over its entire lifespan of more than 1 tredecillion (non-US) (1 quinvigintillion (US)) (10^78 or 1 with 78 zeros) years (Big Freeze Model) or 33 billion years (Big Crunch Model), depending on your preference, what knowledge could I have obtained in the 55 years of my existence, in which I, maybe, studied for 15 years (seeing that one does not learn in continuity)?
Right, sir?
Hence my request to elaborate on it, if you would be so kind ... ?

"Past that, I can so sympathize with your trying to learn. For myself, ... . Not editing, which should have been my main push."
We all made this mistake somewhere in life, I bet, sir.
I sure did that too, with a few things.
To be human is to be prone to error, I guess ... and I bet, that your other study, Photoshop, Lightroom, and video, did help you in the end, right?
If so, it was not a loss, good sir.  🙂

"Ah well ... our biggest fight, for all humans, is actually with ourselves. I try to win occasionally but it's dang difficult."
With everything, really, good sir.

"I was SO flippin' wrong on that! Video post has very, very little in common with still image post processing. And this was a hard thing for me to learn."
Yes, with video, the pictures move.  XD
(I hope you did not see this as an insult, sir, it was just a joke. But the joke actually tells quite a bit: all moves ... . It is, in the end, a whole series of "pictures", but each with a minor, often even miniscule difference, and which progress one by one at high speeds ... . So, yes, it would be quite a whole bit different. However, as a colour specialist, you should have a decent advantage over many, I bet? No?)

"There are solid reasons there... .  ... functions of the tools in an NLE."
I am aware, and this even in similar program types, I think of Photoshop vs Gimp, to name but one example in your specialistion, which I find quite baffling.
Then again, if they all were the same, then why have different programs of the same style, correct, sir?  🙂

"For me, until I finally got that bit down, nothing made any sense."
Ah, yes, I know this, I think.  XD
It is where I am, but, the more I try, the LESS all makes sense, however odd this may sound.
I am not used with sound editing, nor video editing, I got the program, because my boss asked if I wanted to try it, probably hoping that I would master it in -2 years, so I could help him out with it last year.  😛
Bosses, an odd species, they are.   *grins*

Thank you, good sir, for the kindness, and for taking it up for sir @Averdahl .
I hope the good sir knows that I meant no disrespect.
As for the:
"I'll be quiet now." was to make no people annoyed with my attitudes ... I am told, quite very often, I am not the easiest to talk to, or to be around ... .
I just want clarity, and straightfarwardness, but this seems difficult for most people.
Just me being me, I guess ... .

I bid you a fine time, good sir, and thank you for the kind words.  🙂

<< for now concentrate to learn how Premiere Pro works>> Absolutely Brilliant!

Premiere is used to edit even feature films and everything below that.. So, learning a bit of how it actually work would go a long way.

For the immediate thing I would simply drop the song into the timeline and edit out the part before and after the bit you want.

Drop in the song, put the time indicator at the beginning of what you want and press Q, move the time indicator to the end of what you want to keep and press W.

With that done, I'd learn what was next... LinkedIn learning has some excellent tutorials via the paid service.

What MyerPj has suggested is technically called "top & tail editing" as you trim the front (top) and end (tail) of the clip.

It's blazing fast as set the CTI/playhead to the place you want the clip to start, hit Q, and it cuts from there to the beginning of that clip, closing any gap to the left of it.

Go to where you want the clip to end, hit W ... and again, it removes from that frame to the end of that clip, and closes any gap to the next clip.

Very, very fast method.
