Question

How to use auto reframe to follow object when zoomed in but keeping the same aspect ratio

  • I would like to shoot a 4k video, zoom in to make it full HD but then use auto reframe (or other means) on premier pro to follow the object. Auto reframe appears to work well when going from 16:9 to other aspect ratios but not when keeping the same ratio and zooming in.

  • Is this even possible?

You can force Auto Reframe to work on footage that matches the sequence aspect ratio by following these steps:

  1. Change your sequence to a narrower frame width, for example from 1920px wide to 960px wide. The narrower the sequence, the harder Auto Reframe will work to keep objects in center of the frame.
  2. Apply Auto Reframe to your footage.
  3. Once it has scanned the footage, tick Overwrite Generated Path in the Effect Controls panel. This will add keyframes that lock in the automatic reframing.
  4. Set your sequence width back to the original width.

In theory this is a great idea, but I just tried this and for some reason the position keyframes seem proportional to the sequence width because when I make the sequence wide again, the Auto reframing position keyframes are way too left or right.. But thank you!!!

Hey stevenhulme,

Welcome to the community. Auto Reframe requires the sequence aspect ratio to be different than the source file aspect ratio. You can try motion-tracking the object in After Effects or manually placing position keyframes in Premiere Pro.

Thanks,

I have the same question. I have a 4K video of a stage where a standup comedian does his thing. I zoomed in to get a medium shot, but he moves around and out of frame.

Instead of painstakingly putting manual keyframes everywhere on the 1h30m timeline, I would love the same automatic workflow as the Auto Reframe WITHOUT changing the aspect ratio.

Thank you Ishan Y for your workaround. Unfortunately motion-tracking will add a very unnatural robotic camera movement to the video while following the subject. The Adobe Sensei in Auto reframe does a more natural job, but doesn't work when keeping aspect ratios...

Auto reframe is only for say taking a 1920x1080 sequence and reformatting it as best "guessed" for say 1080x1080 to use on a social platform.

In other words, it is for moving set things such as graphics to a 'usable' location, when changing frame sizes ... especially when the aspect ratio changes.

It does not have any tracking capabilities, nor is meant for such work.

You need to use masks and tracking processes for what you are trying to do.
