Question

Importer reported a generic error

OK - I'm baffled. After updating MacOS (10.14) and Premiere (13.0 - Build 225) I'm getting a "the importer has reported a generic error" message. Most clips relink like they should. I have a random folder or two of clips that do not relink. The same camera and codecs are used in other folders but for some reason this one folder doesn't relink. A "generic" error message doesn't help. Yes, I've tried to copy the clips into another folder that has been renamed and still get the same message. Again, it's from the same camera and the same codecs as the other folders that don't have a problem relinking. Anyone else have the same problem? Any way to resolve this "generic" issue? I'm not going to go off on the tangent of repeated crashes (yes, I've had several) but it would be nice if I could at least work with my media.

    Hey guys,

Have the same problem right now..

If I just import the footage in the project again tho, as you'd import am new file, the "new" footage seems to work fine. You could copy pasta effects and cuts from the "old" to the "new" footage etc. This is a solution for me and could be a solution for someone else, so; I felt like putting it here.

    Good luck!

    Thanks.

I guess it's related to the old project. I can import the questionable files into a new project.

The project was completed months ago but the client came back and wanted to make some changes.

Looks like I'll have to start from scratch. Gotta love software updates.

You can install a previous version of Premiere Pro without affecting CC 2019. You can have different versions installed at the same time, so depending on how much work you have done to the project in CC 2019 it is indeed possible to download the version that created the project and continue working on the old project to save time.

Different versions of Premiere Pro can coexist on the computer without problems.

Hi. Did you resolve this? I had the same issue today 7-1-19 – all I did was open the 'offending' clips in QT, they converted and I renamed them/saved them back in by link media. It resolved it, but is a faff. Odd Adobe has not addressed this yet...

    OK, Here's another screen shot.

Same camera, same disk, same codecs - some relink, others don't.

Hmm, despite the details i cannot answer...

The only thing i can see is that you upgraded mid-project and that should be avoided though most of the times it works fine. I recommend to continue and finish that project in the version you upgraded from. There is one thing that may fix the issue if you want to continue in CC 2019.

    1. Create a new project in CC 2019
    2. Go to File > Import and select the old project file and click OK
    3. It will take some time and it will look like Premiere Pro stops responding, but be calm and just wait.

I just assume that you opened the old project file in CC 2019. Importing old project files into a new project is often safer and less prone to errors during the regular conversion from old project to new project.

    That’s interesting.

Thanks for the tip and I’ll give it a shot on Monday morning when I’m back in that location.

    Thanks for the help.

The current version of Premiere is 13.0.1 - make sure you update because it fixed a variety of bugs (not sure if this is one of them, but it would be worth a shot).

Well, it was worth a shot, but NO, updating to 13.0.1 did not help. Still getting a "generic error" message.

What media do you use, SD, HD, 4K, 8K and from what camera? Post a screen shot of the error message. Without details one can only guess.

OK, here are a couple of screen shots. One of the error message and one of the Quicktime info. Not sure of the camera used since it was from an outside source. ALL clips are from the same camera - some relink and other I get the "generic error" issue.
