Importing GH5 footage into Premiere

Sorry if I've missed this in an earlier thread.  When importing 10 bit MOV files shot on a GH5, can I just grab the video files?  Do the other folders contain any information that may be useful during the edit?  Can I just copy-paste the video file folder (by default called xyz_PANA) and discard the rest?  Though I've searched, I haven't found a satisfactory answer in GH5 forums.  Would be grateful for any help or pointers to other threads or forums.  Thanks in advance.

Jim_Simon and Ann Bens have a very long track record of providing really awesome help to people who are having trouble. They are veterans in this forum So if it were me I would follow their advice. Or don't. It's up to you. If you want to read more about importing media there are also some great help files that can guide you into making your own decision for your workflow. Importing media files into Premiere Pro has some really good explanations. Good luck!

The tricky thing is... all the cameras have different ways they store stuff ( I'm assuming you're using an SD card from camera). Even it using something else ( like atomos out of your HDMI ) the SSD would handle stuff the way it is set up by the manufacturer ( atomos).

Since nobody can be expected to know every camera ( and every iteration of it .. like a new one compared to an older one) the easy answer is to just put whatever is on the SD card into the computer HD and then look for your mov files and import them.

If there happens to be other stuff related to them ( like xml metadata files ) then they will be found by the NLE ( hopefully).

In your case you probably just need to move the mov files onto hard drive and import them.

I typically 'reformat' any SD card I put back into camera.... so it's ready to go and deletes old stuff, and if it wants to make other folders it does that during the reformat.

    good luck...

p.s. there are some cameras ( sony S log ) that DO have xml files associated with every clip ( mov file ).   Or is it MP4... I forget...so that's an example of weird stuff.

Some NLE's will recognize the metadata (usually some color space info ) and some won't.  Adobe is stupid, so it doesn't, but that doesn't mean it doesn't need a whole file structure ( all folders) from some cameras to import properly.

So, again, in your case.. just drag the mov files or mp4, whatever they are, onto HD and you should be fine,

folders are what used to be called 'directories' in DOS.. it's just a PATH.

You don't even need to import the folder.. just select all the mov files and put into the folder you want on HD

everyone is happy as clam that you got some info to help...they are nice people.

be forewarned... in the case of using raw from bmpcc with a cinema DNG codec …. you basically get one still image (dng file) for every single frame of your video.  And THOSE are in folders related to your individual shots ( roll camera, cut ).

So THAT stuff has to be accessed (imported) by FOLDER, cause each folder is the CLIP.

hehe.... that's what I mean by some stuff gets weird.

Yes, I'm sure all that's true.  But I was asking only about 10 bit MOV files from the GH5.  For this particular case, you're saying that I do not have to copy the entire folder structure, just the folder with the MOV files...

Thanks all for your patience, even though this thread belongs more appropriately to a GH5 forum.

Proper workflow would be to copy entire card to hdd.

Ingest via Media Browser which will show you just the clips.

Thanks very much for your response.  May I ask why you feel that is the proper workflow?  I can't seem to find any files in the other folders.  It's tedious to have to deal with multiple folders and unless information is being lost, I'd rather keep it simple.  Remember - these are MOV files which I'm told are stand alone.  Thank you again.

There are times when you can deal with the video files alone.  There are times when you can't.

If you always treat the media as the latter, you'll never screw it up.
