Question

iPhone 16 Pro Max sequence setting

I need clarity regarding the sequence setting for iPhone 16 Pro Max. It is looking over saturated, over exposed and skin tones are bright pink.

In Sequence Settings > Color Management , I am not clear on the Color Setup setting I should use. The options are Direct Rec 709, Direct HLG and Direct PQ. I am using the first one, Direct Rec 709. The Output Color Space is set at Rec 709.

In the Lumetri Settings, what setting should be used in HDR Graphics and is this affecting the saturation and color? What Viewer Gamma should be used, 2.4 Broadcast? Or Quicktime? In Source Clip, I have used Overridew to Rec 709. In Sequence Direct HLG, I have selected Direct Rec 709 (SDR) with Rec 709 Color Space. The Working Color Space is set at Rec 709.

Can you advise?

Yes, per @FlyingFourFun do enjoy your edit.

I'm sure Apple will jump on your request, and produce some info right away.

In the meantime, you can also search Google. Here's what I found, with a simple search

https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes.pdf

Check out page 19 and 20.

Hopefully "they should provide in the Specs" for you.

Thanks! It is dated 2022 and I wonder if the iPhone 16 has a faster processor. The data in the table is close to my informal test:

1 min > 3.5 GB

BTW: Per the slight diversion above, you can put a Global FX button on your program monitor using the + Plus Sign at the bottom-right. It gives you a visual clue when it's activated.

The new Colour (Color) Management in Premiere has been a real benefit in my current project where I have mised HDR (from  iPhone 15Pro) and normal Rec 709 clips from my Panasonic S5II

Thanks also to @FlyingFourFun for posting the link to VideoRevealed Intro to the settings on this topic.

Very useful

The new Premiere Colour (Color) management has been a life saver importing mixed clips from iPhone 15 Pro HDR and my S5 II Rec 709.

Works a treat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmPKhXDTJuE

Also; try this video for a really good baseline:

Fairly simple if you stick with Rec.709/SDR timeline and exports.

Display Color Management on (unless using a calibrated and profiled monitor fed through a breakout device not a GPU).

Extended Dynamic Range on also for Mac users.

Auto detect log and auto tonemapping on, sequence to Rec.709.

Viewing gamma is a tickler unfortunately thanks to Apple

UNLESS you are doing color work in a mostly darkened room, Viewing Gamma should be Gamma 2.2 (which is by the standard and has nothing to do with whether you send to web or broadcast).

Viewing Gamma to 2.4 if working in a semi-darkened room no matter if heading for web or broadcast.

But ... if working on a Mac, without Reference modes set to HDTV, Apple's CM utility will apply an incorrect display transform of 1.96 to video played back in QuickTime Player and Chrome and Safari.TThis lightens shadows a bit.

VLC and Potplayer will show a more correct display transform on the same computer.

So if you only care how it looks on Macs without Reference modes set to HDTV, set the viewing gamma 1.96 option. It will look the same after export in QuickTime Player and Chrome and Safari.

But too dark on that computer in VLC and Potplayer and Firefox, and on all other screens.

Everyone's mileage always varies ...

Thank you all for the information. These formats and colour spaces are not a strong point of mine. I would like to maintain the quality at the ProRes level and not a compressed version for Youtube etc. With the new settings I now have much more neutral colours, which is great. However, a problem I have never encountered: I cannot do any colour correction with Lumetri either with the clip or through an Adjustment layer. I tried creating a new project but this has not helped. Any suggestions?

On the Wrench icon on the program monitor, there is a Global FX Mute option. Make sure it's not checked.

You can look around also, for some other similar posts and with answers from @R Neil Haugen . I'm sure he'll want to know what kind of monitor are you displaying the video. Are you using a Mac? If so, which model?

I am not sure what exactly your end target state is, but try this, and see if it moves you closer;

When you create your sequence, or after, chance sequence settings to "rec709".  This assumes you want your final output to be in rec709 (aka youtube or any Target that doesn't support HDR playback.  This preset will change the color output space to rec709 and the working color space to rec709.   If you editing monitor both supports and is setup correct, you can leave the working color space at HDR (or a variant like HLG etc).  Adobe now will properly convert a clip to appear proper on the timeline, and output even if they are different.

I don't bother making any changes in the lumetri settings after I make that one change, its the only change I have ever needed to make to get color space to work properly (assume you are on on the latest version of PP, this didn't work on older versions).

As a side note the timeline clips apparently do not currently work with the color space, only the source and program windows will show proper color space.

These are the settings that I have when I set the timeline to Rec709:

The preferences for color management I have are:

There might be something minor I am not reading in your original post that I am overlooking,  but I figured having an sample of what works maybe makes its possible for your confirm it matches, and then someone else can maybe add more to help you.

It would however be ideal if you can tell us what the outcome your looking for?  I assumed it was to take iphone HLG2100 clips, and edit in a rec709 workspace and output in rec709 also.    What you described, seems like you have the settings right, but the description of color shift to pink etc seems very wrong - almost like you might be using a HDR display with incorrect HDR setup, but that's a guess on my part.

This information from you and others has been great, thank you!

I am newly filming on the iPhone 16 Pro Max and my goal is to have "raw" or "log" footage, ie not saturated or contrasty, in order to better be able to colour correct it. Following the various recommendations, it looks much much better and workable.  And not impossible, as before. I want to maintain the maximum quality for best options depending on what I use it for, not just streaming quality but broadcast.

I am glad to see you made some progress in the right direction - and yes the global effects mute has tripped up probably everyone...  maybe even twice....

You can film in log with your iphone, if you get external storage thats fast enough and connect it to the USB on the phone if you want more controll of the color, and higher frame rates etc.  Its not "cheap" but you can add a SSD drive,  nice thing about using external storage is you can copy it over to work on way faster too.

Its not required, but if max control is what you are after you can consider it.

More info here, Lexar brand seems to the to go-to, but not sure if thats because it was highly promoted to YouTuber's.
