My goal would be to change out some dialog from a HD mp4 file without disrupting the background music. Is that even possible in Premiere Pro? And if so, what am I missing? I've already unlinked video from audio but can't figure out how to separate the dialog from background music.
If I'm understanding your question correctly you might want to send your clip into Audition. In Audition you'd go to Effects/Stereo Imagery/Center Channel Extractor. This effect may be able to remove the vocals from the mp4. Try the preset for Instrumental.

Rob, sounds like in order to extract the dialog from the back ground music I would lose the original soundtrack for the background music and need to find a replacement. I've seen a lot of youtube video for removing vocals from songs or removing the background music but sounds like I can't save the music track and just drop in some replacement voice over for the latter part of the video which explains a pivot in our features.
