When multitasking, I use other GPU and memory intensive applications. Is there a way to tell Premiere to calm down when idle, without closing the app?

Turn of GPU acceleration and go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and turn the maximum memory for other apps up. Additionally, I don't know if this works but you can try going to task manager and setting the priority/affinity lower. No idea how to do that on Mac.
