Question

Keeping subtitles in synch as I edit

I'm editing a short doc with several interviews in a language I don't speak. The producer has provided accurate translations and I have added them as captions to each interview in a timeline. Is there a way I can edit the interviews and keep the captions/subtitles running in synch with the picture? So that I can add B-roll and cutaways and keep the captions visible while the interview is heard but not seen?

I have not tried this. Just avoid making any MOVES of the interview relative to the captions. For example, you can insert as long as you do it between captions and the interview moves with it.A regular insert moves the captions with the other items on the timeline.

You can move/cut/paste the interview and its associated captions to another location on the timeline. Just select the captions with the video/audio. The timecodes adjust to the new location.

Play with that a bit to confirm that it is working.

Yes, it would take very little to destroy the sync.

Are you burning in the captions? Or using sidecar or embedded?

Thanks Stan,

I'll try this ad let you know how it goes. I think we will end up with embedded subtitles - in various languages.
