Locating media on an external harddrive

Hey!

So, I'm editing off of an external harddrive (yes, I know that it is completely advised against) but I'm not able to locate any of the media on the drive through Premiere Pro. Am I really going to have to transfer everything to my computer for Premiere to be able to locate media? I've been editing off external drives for years and never had this issue until recently. Could it be computer settings, maybe? For reference -- I'm using a Mac.

Thanks!

Hi there! I'm trying the "locate media" but it will not allow me to select anything on the drive. I've just given up and dragged everything onto my desktop; that worked out.

Hello Sarah etc.,

"I'm editing off of an external harddrive (yes, I know that it is completely advised against)."

This is precisely the opposite of true. Adobe's recommendations here: (scroll down to "Specify scratch disks to improve system performance")

"By default, scratch disk files are stored where you save the project. ... For best performance, dedicate a hard disk or disk strictly for your media assets. Choose a disk for the assets other than the disk where you keep your project file, operating system files, or the files for applications. That way your media disks can access and play media files as fast as possible, without having to access other files."

When you say "I'm not able to locate any of the media on the drive through Premiere Pro" are you using the dialog that is brought up with the Import command, or are you using the Media Browswer panel, or what? In these tools, is your external drive appearing? If so are folders on the drive appearing?

It could be the way that the hard drive is formatted. An Exfat format allows files to be read on both Windows and Mac. Other formats usually don't.

Could be. Thank you, Rob.
