Macbook HDR Workflow and Color Correcting

I’m attempting to move to a fully HDR workflow in Premiere Pro. I’ve got everything working correctly except I can’t figure out how to properly display the footage in the program monitor so I can color correct. I can import and export the HDR footage successfully and it looks great and in full HDR on the output. Why does the video still look slightly hot in the program monitor in Premiere Pro? I assumed if I was shooting and working in the correct color space in premiere pro and on a macbook that is capable of displaying HDR, I would be able to work end to end in HDR. Assuming wrong?

 

Editing on a 2023 MacBook Pro 16” with an Apple M2 Max chip and HDR display

Shot on an iPhone 14 Pro Max, 4K HDR, Rec. 2100 HLG color space and HEVC 10 bit 4:2:0 codec.

Premiere pro working space is set to Rec. 2100 HLG with Auto Tone Map Media checked

Export using HEVC - Match Source - HLG preset

    First, I can't see any scopes there, so I can't really comment on the 'levels' of the image.

     

    Second ... do you have the Preferences option for Display Color Management checked? That must be on for any HDR workflows.

     

    And ... on Macs ... they also have an "extended dynamic range where available" or something like that, which you might try also.

    Thanks so much for your reply! I had display color management checked but I did not have "extended dynamic range monitoring (where available)" checked and this solved the problem. Now it looks right and I can color correct. Here are the scopes if your interested. Now I need to figure out what i'm going to do about my non HDR dual monitor dock setup. For now, i'll edit in the dock and color correct last pass on the laptop.

    That's an amazingly well distributed trace there in the scopes ... wow!

     

    HDR has so many freaking picky little things, and if any one isn't just perfect, well ... the results ain't gonna work at all.
