MacOS Sonoma running Premiere Pro

Novato ,
Oct 11, 2023 Oct 11, 2023

Does anyone know why Premiere Pro wont run on MacOS Sonoma on my laptop? Is it just not compatable yet or is there a problem that needs fixing? Everything worked fine until I updated my Mac last week. Thanks

HOLY. CRAP. IT NOW WORKS.....

It was "Record It".  This guy:

Record It - Screen Recorder on the Mac App Store (apple.com)

I DID originally have "Record It" installed on the Ventura OS earlier before Premiere Pro crashed the first time. then when I formatted and then installed Sonoma, I was editing fine....but I had to capture the screen for something so I launched Record It and i wanted the "sytem Audio" so I do remember installing "something" to do that....and yeah - probably around that time the

@Kevin-Monahan - here is the weird thing. the first time it crashed - I NOTICED the splash screen not "doing" anything....nothing was coming up, no text flipping by, showing it loading stuff.....like I am used to seeing.  All it showed was the date, then the artwork statement. Nothing more. And since I have uninstalled, formatted, reinstalled and everyhting....now that it is doing the SAME thing again (after one afternoon and one morning of use) - it is hanging up at the SAME point......on the splash screen.

I have just now installed Premiere Pro 23.6.2 - SAME CRASH ISSUE - uninstalled it then installed 23.6 - launched it - SAME ISSUE HANG CRASH.

I can't even install an older version.....and yes, I rebooted after each uninstall....

@Kevin-Monahan - but remember, this is not a Sonoma Mac OS issue.....the original crash happened on Ventura. I only upgraded to sonoma thinking "Oh, upgrade the OS, it will fix the software issue" - but it hasn't....

I am completely fine with downgrading the OS.....but I HAVE to get Premiere Pro 24.1 working because ALL of my work is in that version. On my Mac at home I cannot open any of the project files. I have an older Mac that will not install anything newer than version 23.x --- if I can open 24.1, I can then SAVE AS to an older project version? Work from home..? ----- this is so frustrating. THANK YOU for the help....

@Kevin-Monahan - and this thing? This "Adobe Creatigve Cloud Diagnostic" app - I was excited when I found it, but is no help either. Everytime I crash, it runs and tells me "We found 1 issue....there is a newer version...." - but there is not. I have the newest version as you can see. Screenshot 2023-12-20 at 6.25.36 AM.png

Thanks for writing back and including so many details. Appreciated!

Overall, this is pretty weird, @dpitts. I can inspect the crash report from either OS to see if it's anything obvious. Feel free to click "View Report" in the crash dialog box. A text document with the crash report should appear. (numbers and letters, etc.) Copy/paste it here as a reply here in the forum and I can take a look at it. If I can't decipher it, I'll have the devs inspect it. I hope I can help!

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

I spoke with the team and they suggested the following: update/remove/modify the audio device connected to your computer. Do you have any device connected??

Strange that it is detecting that you need an update, but you already have updated.

Another comment that may help:

  • Launch Premiere with SHIFT held down. Delete prefs if needed to get Premiere to launch.
  • Then start changing the preferences back one at a time.
  • Two important places to look at are Playback preferences and audio hardware prefs.
    • In Playback, take a screenshot of the options. And set Transmit to OFF by unchecking the enable box.
    • Go to Preferences - Audio Hardware, take a screenshot with the available devices in the dropdown visible.
      • You can also try changing the settings for output and system clock to their default sound card. If necessary, set the input to "No Input."
      • We are seeing cases lately where using the “System Default “ in Audio Hardware is causing the Clock to select some strange mic or other device, and it can cause some weird behavior. (Playback issues, crashes, etc.)"

I hope the advice helps. Let us know what happens.

Thanks.
Kevin

That had to be it.

In my Sound settings I saw "Record It Audio Device | Virtual" --- I had no other audio "devices" connected...just speakers out of the headphone port. So I found in Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL "RecordIt..." and removed it. Rebooted - it no longer showed up in my audio devices, then launched Premiere Pro AND IT FREAKING WORKED!

So weird....so strange that THAT did "whatever" to it.  I have not starteed editing yet - but it did open, it did restore the project I had opened when it crashed, I closed it, and then it re-opened fast and normal. So I'm about to start editing and see if it all goes well......

Praise be to the devs that can see "that" in the crash report.....I thought it was NUTS. I have nothing but speakers connected, but after looking at Sound - I saw the "audio device".

Wow.  Insane.....I'll keep you updated it it keeps working fine.

Thanks so much.......  Yay!

Glad to hear it! I let the team know so that they can work with the the third-party devs. Thanks for all your comms. I am sure it will help others, @dpitts.

Thank you!

Go to System Preferences, then click "Sound" in the left hand side....then look under "Output" - what audio devices/list do you see? I saw a Virtual Audio device there that was associated to a third party app - once I deleted that, it opened. Do you see anything THERE? (Like you, I wqs unable to change Audio Preferences in Premiere, since it would not even open - but once I removed that audio device - reboot - it worked)
