Does anyone know why Premiere Pro wont run on MacOS Sonoma on my laptop? Is it just not compatable yet or is there a problem that needs fixing? Everything worked fine until I updated my Mac last week. Thanks

Hi,

I spoke with the team and they suggested the following: update/remove/modify the audio device connected to your computer. Do you have any device connected??

Strange that it is detecting that you need an update, but you already have updated.

Another comment that may help:

  • Launch Premiere with SHIFT held down. Delete prefs if needed to get Premiere to launch.
  • Then start changing the preferences back one at a time.
  • Two important places to look at are Playback preferences and audio hardware prefs.
    • In Playback, take a screenshot of the options. And set Transmit to OFF by unchecking the enable box.
    • Go to Preferences - Audio Hardware, take a screenshot with the available devices in the dropdown visible.
      • You can also try changing the settings for output and system clock to their default sound card. If necessary, set the input to "No Input."
      • We are seeing cases lately where using the “System Default “ in Audio Hardware is causing the Clock to select some strange mic or other device, and it can cause some weird behavior. (Playback issues, crashes, etc.)"

I hope the advice helps. Let us know what happens.

Thanks.
Kevin

HOLY. CRAP. IT NOW WORKS.....

It was "Record It".  This guy:

Record It - Screen Recorder on the Mac App Store (apple.com)

I DID originally have "Record It" installed on the Ventura OS earlier before Premiere Pro crashed the first time. then when I formatted and then installed Sonoma, I was editing fine....but I had to capture the screen for something so I launched Record It and i wanted the "sytem Audio" so I do remember installing "something" to do that....and yeah - probably around that time the crash happened.....so yeah. That had to be it.

In my Sound settings I saw "Record It Audio Device | Virtual" --- I had no other audio "devices" connected...just speakers out of the headphone port. So I found in Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL "RecordIt..." and removed it. Rebooted - it no longer showed up in my audio devices, then launched Premiere Pro AND IT FREAKING WORKED!

So weird....so strange that THAT did "whatever" to it.  I have not starteed editing yet - but it did open, it did restore the project I had opened when it crashed, I closed it, and then it re-opened fast and normal. So I'm about to start editing and see if it all goes well......

Praise be to the devs that can see "that" in the crash report.....I thought it was NUTS. I have nothing but speakers connected, but after looking at Sound - I saw the "audio device".

Wow.  Insane.....I'll keep you updated it it keeps working fine.

Thanks so much.......  Yay!

This has got to be against the law or something....I would just LOVE to be a multi-billion dollar movie studio and this happen..

I had Ventura Mac OS 13 and Premiere Pro 24.1 - no problems for a long time. I didn't install any plugins or anything - just create projects. All of a sudden - CRASH and it would never open again. Adobe's silly little troubleshooting popup tells me to update to the latest version - I HAVE! Reboot. nothing. uninstall - reboot - reinstall. Nothing. Still crashed. I finally did "Erase all content and settings" on my Mac - reinstalled. CRASH. installed 23.x version - of course it worked but GUESS WHAT? When you then open your project "this project was made in a newer version of Premiere Pro and cannot be opened" - REALLY?

I ended up erasing all content and setting - AGAIN, then upgraded to Sonoma. installed 23.6 - it opened. then upgraded to 24.1 - IT WORKED........for one afternoon and one morning. Now (11:42 am) it crashed - won't open SAME DAMN PROBLEM.

It hangs on the splash screen - and does nothing - you don't see it "doing" anything. It's not loading anything, plugins, nothing....just the splash screen and then a "Sorry, an error occurred..." pop up.

This. Is. Insanity.

It worked great all morning. No, I didn't install any plugins or anything, just worked on clips, exported to After Effects, back into Premiere Pro, stating editing and adding audio, sfx and then it just crashed and WILL NOT re-open.

Yeah, so I'll play the uninstall - reinstall - reboot game - AGAIN and waste my day.

This is so stupid.

Hi @William227481831npx - Hey there, @dpitts,

I read your case notes. I wonder what's going on there as I have no similar issues running macOS 14.1.2 on my M1 MacBook Pro. Let's make sure you have the same config as I do.

  • Do not install any plug-ins which install into the app package itself. Current BlackMagic Design software is known to do such things.
  • Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders and also for Full Disk Access. Ensure that permission is given for Adobe applications.
  • If these things have been checked, perform a permissions check for preferences in Adobe digital video and audio applications, as mentioned in this KB doc.
  • Press Shift at launch: clear media cache, reset app preferences, reset plugin loading cache, and disable third-party plugins (one time only).
  • Reply with a screenshot of your splash screen. It should show the module it is hanging on.

Let us know what happens. I hope the advice helps. Sorry for the frustration.

Thank You,

Kevin

@Kevin-Monahan - here is what I just did:

  • Plugins:  I haven't installed any because I had to "Erase all Content & Settings" and then upgraded to Sonoma, so my computer is clear of plugins - I have not installed any.
  • Checked system settings....all is correct
  • Checked the KB doc (found that earlier) and permissions are Read/Write for my user
  • Pressed Shift at launch --- nothing. Of course I have already uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled thinking it would help so there is nothing to reset and clear I guess....but the splash screen came up and then it just hung - no progress bar or anything.

Here is my Mac:  Mac Studio 2022, 128 GB, Apple M1 Ultra, 2 TB drive, three displays (39-inch 3440x1440 - 21.5 inch 1680x1050 - 21.5 inch 1680x1050), 48 cores, Sonoma 14.2

Hi,

Sonoma really should be working OK. Sorry for the frustration. I'll update to check on the issue.

There is one known issue and it is an Apple related one: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/macos-sonoma-permission-issue.html. Let me know if that doc solves your problem.

Please keep in mind that any update to the OS also means you need to go to System Preferences and adjust the Privacy & Security settings. Furthermore, it helps to reset preferences and delete all media cache for the new version of Premiere Pro. If it is legacy projects giving you trouble, see if a brand new project exhibits the same issues for an easy sanity check.

I hope that info helps you with Premiere Pro 24.0 and macOS Sonoma.

Thanks,
Kevin

Dear Kevin, thank you so much for the hints. I haven't yet updated to Sonoma. I really would like to, but I don't want to start a journey of trying to fix things afterwards so I'm cheking routinely until Adobe claims officially it works 🙂

Adobe released Premiere 24.0.3 but it doesn't seem to fix the Sonoma compatibilty issue. Can anyone else confirm?

Same thing happened to me. Surely Premiere 24 DOES NOT WORK on iMac, very annoying, it keeps crashing.

Today I have a huge delivery. Now what?

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately it is not a sharing/permissions problem.

I reinstalled Sedona and then Premiere 24 and it worked for a couple of days without crashing. Today it colsed unexpectedly though (while  switching from the audio to the edting workspace). It got better but I can't say the problem is solved.

Thanks for your support.

Thanks very much. Do we know how long it usually takes for them to sort it?
