Media Browser and Rendering Windows Media files .asf extension

I am using Premiere Pro CC 2017 Windows 10 whenever open folders that contain .asf files the browser starts Processing.... and does not display thumbnails for a long time. We are talking hours I see a lot of CPU usage and with 16gb of RAM and NVIDIA Quatro 3000 it eventually fills the RAM and looks like it has locked up the machine. However trying this with only a few files of less the 1gb I have had it complete processing and display thumbnails. If I attempt to render the files using Encoder to MP4 I get audio only output and the video is lost.

It seems real strange because Windows Movie Maker and Media Expresso convert them very easily. I guess it is just a streaming video file type. I am really not thrilled to have to convert these files before I can edit them in Premiere Pro seeing that in some of the advertising I have seen it claimed compatibility. I have no special Codecs installed.

    Hi wouldchuck1,

Where exactly are those .asf files located?

Try importing a couple of .asf files from the desktop.

    Thanks,

    Hello Kulpreet,

Normally all my files are accessed off my network drives.

I took a small one and moved it to the desktop. The file was only 19mb. I opened up Premiere Pro CC 2017 and went to the desktop directory with Media Browser. Turns out the .ASF file was not the only media file on the desktop there were also 3 small .JPG files. Media Browser showed all of them as Processing and no thumbnails like were shown on the desktop. I opened up Task Manager and watched as it went to 66% CPU usage and gradually filled up the 16gb RAM when it got to 99% nothing changed and I had lost my cursor no way to shutdown except hitting the reset button on the PC.

These files are all less then 704 x 480 resolution so they should be a breeze as the cameras are not HD.

    Thank you,

    Chuck
