Mini DV capture, Premiere crashes, please advise.

Hi

I'm going through some old, very important, DV tapes and really need some help.

I'm running the old CS5 on this 2009 macbook because last time I had to do some Mini DV capturing this was stable and worked fine. And when I started on these tapes a week or so ago the first few were fine, capturing whole tapes with no problems.

However, now if I try to capture more than 10 - 15 minutes Premiere will crash. If it runs to the end of the tape and ends the capture itself it crashes. If I try to end the capture at anything longer than about 15 minutes then it crashes. The .mov file is written and in the capture folder but doesn't appear in Premiere and if I try to import it, Premiere crashes. The .mov will play in QT and VLC ok but just won't open back in Premiere.

Attaching the error report thing... I don't understand these at all, I'm really hoping someone can help because I have around another 300 tapes to do and it would make my life much easier if I could do them in whole hour/whole tape segments.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, a clean install is not an option due to how old the software is.

Have you tried deleting the Premiere Pro preferences?

I'd run Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD and any other drives being used.

I'd try a different Scratch Disk.

I'd try logging the tapes to capture in 10 minute segments with 30 seconds of overlap (not ideal, but might at least get all 300 tapes captured).

I'd try getting Final Cut Pro 7 installed (it won't register, but should run fine with a valid serial number).

I'd consider getting a "renewed" Mid 2012 13-inch MacBook Pro that has a native FireWire800 port and can run masOS Catalina 10.15.7 which is still supported for Premiere Pro (with a subscription, of course).  That's what I've kept around for when a DV tape pops up.  I use an ad-on called SwitchResX so that the display resolution meets Premiere Pro's requirements.

If you happen to opt for a M1 Mac mini, you'll need about $100 worth of adapters from Apple to patch a DV device and need to run Premiere Pro using Rosetta for the capture option.

Hi

Thanks very much.

I'd tried changing the scratch disk, and cleared the media cache already. I'll run disk utility, delete preferences and see how that goes.

If not, then logging and capturing in 10 min segments will be the way I guess.

Again, thanks very much.

I'll be back with another problem soon no doubt.

Ben

Hi Ben,

Sorry for the pain. You might try setting up a boot disk with an earlier version of macOS. Otherwise, check out Warren's suggestions. They're good.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

Thanks for your reply

El Capitan 10.11.6

Sorry, I really thought I'd written that on the post.
