My Premiere and After effects Crash a lot. NEED HELP

These are my specs

Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz

Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z170X-Gaming 3

16 Gigs RAM

Radeon RX 580 Series

232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB

When using Premiere and After Effects, it's really slow when previewing and crashes a lot. I'm not sure what is going on with it. I have tried countless things to fix these programs from running so slow and crashing like uninstalling, clearing the cache, giving the program all the RAM. Is it my specs or could it be another underlying issue. I really don't want to go spend money on more pc parts but I edit a lot for school and freelance work so idk what to do. Can somebody help? Thx

Hi Ryan,

Good morning. Sorry to hear about your performance issues. In reading the system requirements, it seems as if your situation might be improved with the following suggestions.

  1. Purchase a second drive to place your media on. Your OS should live on a separate drive. This offloads a tremendous amount of extra work you're asking your computer to do. Ensure your video preview (render) files are routed here, as well.
    1. Placing media on a second drive is the first thing an editor should do to improve performance.
    2. A third SSD can help performance in both Premiere Pro and After Effects if you assign the media cache to that drive.
  2. Your CPU is a 6th generation i7. According to system requirements, this might be underpowered for 4K workflows. If you are using 4K media, consider creating proxies or transcoding the media to an editing codec. Your CPU is more suitable for HD workflows, as it stands. A 7th generation CPU or better would work for 4K workflows.
  3. Avoid "giving the program all the RAM." You do not want to give so much RAM to, say, After Effects if the OS doesn't have enough memory to run. A balanced amount of RAM should be assigned to these applications. 16 GB RAM for After Effects is not a lot for larger/longer comps, as you need to leave some RAM assigned for the OS. More info here in the School of Motion post. I'm set to 11 GB AE, 5GB Other apps.
  4. In Premiere Pro, check Project Settings to make sure that GPU acceleration is enabled for the Mercury Playback Engine.
  5. When exporting, make sure that Hardware Acceleration is enabled. This assists H.264 exports via Quick Sync.
  6. Before importing, make sure that Preferences > Media > Enable hardware accelerated decoding is enabled (restart if necessary). This assists H.264 handling and improves performance via Quick Sync.
  7. More advice for system tuning from our lead tech in this forum post here. I hope the advice contained in that doc is helpful.

I hope you try these things, then report back on the results. I hope we can work together in finding out what's going on there.

Thanks,
Kevin
