Question

No audio during playback

No audio playback in the source or program viewers. Here are the steps I have already taken to try to resolve the issue:

  • Restart program
  • Restart computer
  • Update software
  • Create a new project file
  • Clear media cache (both in program and manually in "common" resource folder
  • Wait for Premiere to conform all media and sound files

Premiere reaches a point where audio waveforms appear rendered in the timeline and source viewer. While videos will play back, the audio beneath does not play on any file. VLC and Quicktime play the files fine; the files are not corrupt, my output audio hardware is set to the correct (internal speakers) setting, my audio channels are not muted. The files I am trying to play back include predominantly .MXF files but this issue seems to affect any audio file I import. Wave files and low bit rate .MP4s have the same issue. Premiere will sometimes randomly, though very infrequently, decide to load and play audio correctly in the same project file I am currently working on, though for the life of me I cannot find rhyme or reason to it. Most of the time it will not play.

Here are my system specs:

OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5

iMac Retina 5k

3.3 GHz Intel Core i5

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM

AMD Radeon R9 m290 2048 MB Graphics Card

I am running the most up-to-date version of Premiere CC (v11.1.2 (22) Build)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have the same problem.  I'm using a Mac Book Pro i7.

In Adobe Premiere Pro 2019 the wave bars show that the sound is on and it should playback, but no sound is coming out of my speakers.  The settings are correct.  Randomly it works, but only for about 10% of the time if I did reset my Mac.  About 40% it will work if I opened Adobe Premiere Pro 2018 and then Adobe Premiere 2019.

I need a solution to this.  I need to work!!!

Hi Jaco,

I know this issue is infuriating...here's what worked for me. Double check these two settings:

Preferences > Audio Hardware > Default Output

and

Preferences > Playback > Audio Device

Hopefully one of these preferences is your culprit. I discovered Premiere was randomly changing my settings each time I started the program until I manually reset it. Strange.

Thanks for the advice

No setting changes under AudioHardware seems to make a difference. But I could make a workaround. I used NewTechNDI Monitor to stream my Premier on the network and view it on my own pc. Then the NDI Monitor play the sound. Sad but true, it works.

I wonder if the sound is send somehow to the NDI platform and then not to my Mac’s hardware, although my Premiere audio settings are set to my Mac? Weird.

Have you tried uninstalling Premiere, Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems, re-installing Premiere? You might want to also try clearing all system-wide and project-local media caches... the cleaner tool may do this actually.

Have these files ever worked on this particular system with Premiere without issue? Or has this particular issue always occurred?

I'm not on Mac but those are the first things that come to mind.
