NVIDIA Driver TDRs When adding items to the timeline
- Issue - NVIDIA Driver TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) event causing PC lockups using Premiere Pro
- Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 23.4.0 (Build 56)
- Operating system - Windows 11 Pro - Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.1702)
- System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, Studio Driver version 531.61
RAM - 32GB (2x 16GB DDR4-3800)
Corsair MP600 2TB NVME SSD + Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME SSD
- Video format: Video Codec Type: MP4/MOV H.264 4:2:0
- Workflow details: Multiple Video Files edited together with Audio Effects
- Steps to reproduce - Chance of occuring when dragging and dropping any item from the Windows Explorer interface to the Timeline in order to add that item. It has has happened with video files, still images/graphics and audio files.
- Expected result - The item would be added successfully.
- Actual result - Screen locks up, eventually goes black, driver restarts multiple times with windows initiating a TDR event, the screen stays black for 2-3 minutes then successfully recovers. Premiere Pro, in its defence, remains functional after the recovery and no work is lost, but only after waiting a few minutes with an unresponsive system.
Please note this issue doesn't always occur.
I have attached some Event Viewer Screenshots.

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
\Device\000003d3
Restarting TDR occurred on GPUID:900

Further Details: (Please note these are technically anecdotes).
This problem has been occuring for me for a long time, well over 18 months. It is quite sporadic, but occurs frequently enough to be a big problem for me. It has occured with multiple system configurations, operating system versions, GPU driver revisions, version of Premiere Pro and hardware configurations.
GPUs that I can confirm this has occured on:
GTX 1660 SUPER
RTX 2080 Ti
RTX 2070
RTX 2060 SUPER
RTX 3050
RTX 3060 12GB
RTX 3060 TI
RTX 3090
RTX 4090
This issue has NOT occured on AMD Radeon GPUs including RX 590 and RX Vega 56, but I do not frequently use those GPUs for my workflow.
Furthermore, the issue has occured on multiple configurations such as
Ryzen 9 3900XT - 64 GB RAM
The issue occurs with an without multiple monitors connected, though I can anecdotally say it happens more frequently with the preview window on a seperate monitor (either connected to the same display adapter or two separate ones). It occurs with a single GPU in the system or multiple.
It has occured with Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 11 Pro (Multiple versions).
NVIDIA drivers for the last 18~ months have been effected. I almost always use the Studio Branch.
Further notes:
I work specifically with assets dragged into the timeline from Synced OneDrive folders, considering the nature of the TDR event, it could be related.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
Regards,
Ashley
