Question

Optimal drive workflow for Premiere Pro and AE

Hi guys,

I have a workstation with 2 internal SSDs.  The first SSD is dedicated for my OS.  My second internal SSD is dedicated to project files.

My question is, would allow for faster processing to keep the SCRATCH + MEDIA CACHE folders on the 2nd internal SSD drive along with the project files, or is it better to use an external USB 3.0 drive for the scratch and media cache?   Or do I need to compare the transfer of my internal drive to that of my external drives before making a decision?

Thanks all, any input is very appreciated!!

"Does it matter if I route to the SSD with my OS and programs on it, or the SSD that I'm using for the project files?"

It probably won't matter which SSD, but I'd put it on the OS drive until you get a dedicated cache drive.

also, you might consider using a proxy workflow.  Makes things much speedier while you're editing but does not comprimise your export quality.  You might want to tell us the sort of source media and output formats you usually work with.

I would not use the external for cache. Use one ot the internal SSDs.

Thanks for all your correspondence. I plan to add a third drive, but will use this as a quick-fix.

With those specs, I would add a third internal SSD for cache.

In the meantime, is it OK to use one of the above-mentioned exernal hardrives that I have for Cache?

What about processor, graphics card, and RAM?

Use the externals for archiving and backup.

Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor, 3593 Mhz

RAM - 64 GB

Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

With this setup, what other upgrades would you recommend to help me reach optimal performance? I hope to updgrade components in the future as my budget allows.

Thank you!

Chris

Generally, the cache goes on the fastest drive.

What type of SSDs and what size?

What are the rest of your system specs?

Thank you for your response, Bob!

I have two HP SSD EX920 1TB (one for OS and programs, the other I have been using for both project files and media cache).

I have a few types of external drives:

-LaCie Rugged Mini 2TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD – USB 3.0

-Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD

I'm not opposed to buying a new drive if it would provide optimal performance.

Thanks again for your input!
