Panasonic V-log only shows flat color profile when sequence is set to Rec 2100 PQ.

Question

I am used to editing DJI drone footage in Premiere, but recently I have invested in a Lumix S5iiX camera to shoot video. I shoot in log on both. I noticed that when I bring my Panasonic V-log videos (shot in Pro Res 422 HQ, 4K24P) into Premiere, it wasn't being displayed as a flat profile and seemed like it was automatically applying the Rec709 conversion. In fact, if I change the sequence setting from rec709 to Rec2100 PQ, it does show me the flat profile. But I thought Rec2100 was for HDR, which this video is not shot in HDR. Going back to my drone video, the DJI log video gets imported as flat even when the sequence is set to Rec 709. Does anyone know why these are different? I am thinking it has something to do with the Pro Res?

I think it was just a glitch in the project. With auto detect log set to off, I started a new project and imported the same file. Now it shows log correctly. In the old project, I even tried deleting the video file and re-importing with the auto detect off but it still did not fix it. Maybe once you import with auto detect on, the program is unable to change back. Possibly a glitch?

Hi Scott!

I'm a product manager at Adobe. I'm responsible for color, codec support, and cameras (and too many other things!) so this is right up my alley. First, congratulations on getting the Lumix S5 IIX! It's a lovely camera and it's one we support very well.

I've got a couple of suggestions for you to try. First, ensure you're using the latest version of Premiere Pro, currently v23.5. Second, clear your media cache by holding down the shift key, clicking on the Premiere Pro icon to launch the application, then select "Clear media cache files" from the Reset Options dialog. A damaged media cache can affect how Premiere Pro displays video and clearing the cache causes no harm. (Premiere Pro will just recreate it.) Third, open Preferences and ensure that Auto Detect Log Video Color Space is turned off; it should be by default.

With that done, the log video from your S5 should appear flat. If it doesn’t, message me via this page and I’ll ask you to send a sample file. I suspect the problem you’re seeing is that Auto Detect Log Video Color Space is turned on. That will make the V-log footage appear not flat - but it will not affect the drone footage, as our Auto Detect feature does not currently support DJI log.
