Play-Stop Toggle Not Working

Hello all! I've been editing videos for about a month and things have been fine, up until today.

I started a new project this morning. When I go to hit the play button (or space bar) it takes... maybe 10 seconds until the video starts to play. If I pause the video and press play again, it does the same. If I cut parts of the video and then press play again, it AGAIN takes ten or more seconds for the video to begin playing.

I've already tried the Preferences>Audio Hardware > Device class, and that seems to be okay. I always have the playback resolution at 1/4.

So I'm not sure why it is that suddenly, after making... maybe 40 videos without a problem, suddenly it's taking me ten times as long because the Play-Stop Toggle is lagging.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

I'm not sure of your hardware specs, so that's a separate variable, but another very important factor in your editing performance is the type of media you're working with. If you're working in a poor editing codec like h264 or h265, if you potentially have variable framerate involved (phones and screen capture), then you're likely going to notice playback issues. You can post a little bit more about your situation: hardware, premiere version, and media you're working with, and then people will be better able to identify what may be happening. Without knowing more I would say you need to create proxies or transcode into an intermediate codec prior to editing.
