Playback issues

So I edited a project using some ground aerials clips - 1080. When imported, I can preview with no problem  in source window. The playback of th clips in the timeline was fine too... Then whatever reason, the next time I opened up the project, the video clips took forever to load and show as thumbnails in the timeline. playback happened but the clips dont show, only audio is heard. When I scrub the timeline, clips dont change. I have no idea what is going on. I decided to import additional cloips shot from same camera, same settings, etc... they play totally fine. So what happened to the clips that were originally edited? Premiere is working just fine otherwise.

I tried putting them in new sequence - no change
I tried going to Project settings - general and changing to OPENCL - no change.

I am using a PC

Windows 10

8 core processor
Clips on external drive
32GB RAM

I am trying to avoid having to rebuild the entire timeline especially when I dont understand why the timeline is screwy.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE
So I tried to delete a few clips in the bin which in turn deleted them from timeline. Then re imported. When I try to play back in source window, they do not play nor do they in the timeline. I am baffled - how could all the clips not work, not play except for the new ones. They are all in the same folder.

    Also, you may want to:

    Try resetting the preferences:

FAQ: How to reset preferences in Premiere Pro?

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:

    Reset a workspace

Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.

    1. Do one of the following:
      • Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
      • Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.

    from here:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html

If that doesn’t work ,try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site.

    Did you render the timeline?

    Are you using GPU acceleration?

Did you try delleting the media cache database and the media cache files?

What is your hard drive setup (how many, what kind, what is on each, and how full)?

    Yes, timeline was rendered.
GPU acceleration is being used (CUDA)
Hard drive is an external 2 TB connected to my computer via USB 2.0 - at least 1 TB free

Here's the thing, I checked other projects and they play totally fine. Just this one project has become a problem.

Create a new project and import the old project into it.

I tried that and no change. I also tried to create a new project and just import the clips that are troublesome. they would not play. Its not all these clips are suddenly corrupt but they play fine outside of Premier.
